Algernon Blackwood was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, ‘physician extraordinary’. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his ‘mystical’ novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man’s empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children’s fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express.

Biography:
British author, adventurer, newspaper reporter, factory owner, "psychical researcher" — Blackwood's career and interests were varied, although he is best known now as one of the foremost authors of ghost stories in the early 20's, perhaps one of the best ever. His own interest in and understanding of "spiritualism" as well as of human psychology is responsible for the impressive power and effectiveness of his ghostly tales, among the scariest ever written.. Dale J. Nelson Jared Lobdell's A Tolkien Compass (1975) published Tolkien's "Guide to the Names in the Lord of the Rings ," but a reference that Tolkien makes to Algernon Blackwood, in the manuscript of his "Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings " (to use Tolkien's own title for the essay), was omitted from Lobdell's book. Tolkien thought that the "Crack of Doom" might have been derived from something written by Blackwood that he was unable to remember more precisely (Anderson 106). However, Lobdell himself, in his 1981 book England and Always: Tolkien's World of the Rings

Biographical Sketch
Stuart Gilbert was born October 25, l883, at Chipping Ongar, Essex, to Arthur Stronge Gilbert, a retired army officer, and his wife Melvina Kundiher Singh. After graduation from Cheltenham and Hertford College, Oxford, Gilbert joined the Indian Civil Service in 1907. Following military service in the First World War he served as a judge on the Court of Assizes in Burma, retiring in 1924. Soon after his arrival in Paris Gilbert met James Joyce and advised him on the translation of Ulysses into French. From the 1920s until Joyce's death in 1941 Stuart Gilbert worked closely with the Irish novelist, and in his James Joyce's Ulysses helped explicate and popularize that landmark work. In 1957 the first volume of Joyce's letters, edited by Stuart Gilbert, was published. In the last decade of his long life Stuart Gilbert translated numerous texts for the art book publisher Albert Skira of Geneva. Gilbert died in his apartment at 7 rue Jean du Bellay on January 5, 1969.

Thrillers on Thursday 05-05-05
File:
On an impulse, a man gets off a train to spend the night in a remote village, despite warnings from the conductor that doing so will put his soul in jeopardy. This story was first penned by Algernon Blackwood (1869 - 1951), a hack writer of horror stories. The story, like the radio play, was titled Ancient Sorceries , but it's not really worth reading. It beats you over the head with foreshadowing so that you would have to be entirely stupid not to see what is going to happen toward the end. Also, it isn't at all scary. Crutchfield, who I find to be an excellent scriptwriter, did us all a favor by making this story into a passable and interesting drama. The only really interesting thing about the original story is that it was part of a series featuring a "Dr. Silence," who is a kind of psychic scientist/therapist and pulp hero. I read a few of these on a whim, because they can be found on the internet (if you are interested try here:
