In 17th century rural England the daughter of a noble family is kidnapped from her mother by the Doone gang, a group of bandits headed by Sir Charles Ensor Doone. Sir Charles raises her as one of his own under the name of "Lorna Doone." Years later, after Sir Charles passes away, the treacherous Carver Doone plans to marry her. John Ridd, a local yeoman farmer intent on breaking the criminal gang, befriends Lorna and rescues her from Carver Doone's clutches. Lorna learns of her true parentage, but resolves to marry John in spite of the class difference. However, the Doones are set on revenge and Lorna and John are fated to encounter them once again.
The story of Lorna Doone (1922) has inspired a number of films, including a 1935 version directed by Basil Dean, a 1951 version directed by cult favorite Phil Karlson and, most recently, a 2-part BBC television adaptation in 2000. The original 1869 novel by R. D. Blackmore (1825-1900) was by far one of the most popular novels of the 19th century, selling hundreds of thousands of copies by the turn of the century and continuing to sell to this day. The son of a curate, Richard Doddridge Blackmore studied at Exeter College in Oxford, became a barrister (though his career was undoubtedly hampered due to his epilepsy) and taught at a grammar school before finding his true calling as a fruit grower and novelist. He is said to have written, "Anyone looking at my vines would say, 'this is your role my good fellow, stick to it; any ass can write novels." Although

Go Fly a Kite: some reflections on my childhood
After being unable to get it up a few weeks back, I flew a kite yesterday for the first time in my life. With my kite virility restored, I once again reflected on how having children has allowed me to revisit my own childhood and even to correct some shortcomings, like flying a kite. Another shortcoming was a lack of stories and books.
Surprisingly, I had no books as a child. Perhaps this is why I became a librarian (and, no, I do not sit in some quiet corner and read all day long - that would be an idyllic librarian job, and I think it does not exist). I do not clearly remember bedtime rituals, but I know that there were no bedtime stories. I must have been sent off to bed with a smack on the ass.
I sifted through the piles of childhood stuff that my mother sold at successive law sales, and there were no books. There were toys, lots and lots of plastic toys - most of which took batteries and made high pitched noises - but no books. And, my parents did not have library cards. My mother read. Around her living room chair were ashtrays, Harlequin Romances, and stacks of True Romance magazines.

    58. The Victorian Literary Studies Archive, Hyper-Concordance, Concordance, Concorda
    Walter (18361901); Bird, IL (1831-1904); Blackmore, RD(1825-1900); Blake,William (1757-1827); Braddon, ME (1837-1915); Bridges, Robert (1844-1930)
    http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.
