Next Pioneer Cemetery Back to Monroe County The first cemetery established at Paris was just north of the railroad. There are approximately 200 graves in it that are still marked by headstones. The city has had the stones reset in concrete and the grounds have been cleaned up and a fence eected around them to prevent trespassing. Many names famous in early Monroe County history are to be found in this old burial place. This article was published by the newspaper "The Appeal" and it attempts to give as complete as possible list of those buried in this old cemetery. Some stones indicate a single date and that is the death date.

    INTRODUCTION
The Manuscripts Department of the Academic Affairs Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has a long tradition for documenting the history and culture of the American South. Because African Americans have played an integral and leading role in forming that history, records relevant to African-American life and culture constitute a prominent portion of the department's holdings of nearly 14.5 million items. The majority of the collections documented in this guide are plantation records from the antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction period. Entries for these collections discuss topics such as slaves as plantation labor, and later, the hiring of freedmen. There are also several twentieth-century collections described that cover topics such as desegregation, bussing, race relations, and civil rights. The entries are arranged alphabetically by collection name. Listed after the collection name is the collection number and the date span of the entire collection. The entries describe only the portion of the collection pertaining to African Americans, with complete summary records for collections available through the library's online catalog. Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections
    by Samuel A. Sizer
    Description:

Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries was compiled in 1976 by Samuel A. Sizer, then Curator of Special Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries. It contains brief descriptions of 211 collections, including a few that had not been processed at that time. The on-line version updates the 1976 Sizer Guide to reflect work done on those collections in the division since then, and entries are integrated into the alphabetical list and the subject lists of electronic finding aids elsewhere on the Special Collections web site. A paper copy of the complete original Guide is available. Guide Index [Alphabetical]: A B C D ... Y A] ALEXANDER, HENRY MACMILLAN, 1905-1969.
