, writer and journalist. Known for war stories and tales of the supernatural, Bierce's writing was influenced by his early poverty and serious Civil War experiences, as well as by Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen Crane . After the war he worked for periodicals in San Francisco, where he became notorious for his acid wit and hair-trigger temper. He disappeared in Mexico in 1913 while covering Pancho Villa's campaigns for American newspapers, and his fate remains unknown. His book, The Devil's Dictionary , reflects his sardonic approach to life.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of Ambrose Bierce's life is the mystery of his death. In 1913, when he was over seventy years of age, Bierce decided to tour Mexico in order to meet the revolutionary Pancho Villa, and understand firsthand the civil war in progress there. He realized he would probably never return from that war-torn country. His last letter was dated December 26, 1913. After that, his whereabouts are simply unknown, although the contemporary Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes insists that one still hears stories about "an old gringo" wandering the Mexican countryside. In spirit, Bierce certainly haunts the South American literary landscape: major writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, and Fuentes have all been influenced and intrigued by his work and his life.
Bierce was tenth of the thirteen children of Laura Sherwood and Marcus Aurelius Bierce, poor farmers in southeastern Ohio who believed in the western dream of expansion. The family moved in 1846 to a farm outside of Warsaw, Indiana, but did not achieve prosperity there either. Bierce early evinced a keen literary imagination and a nonconformist temperament. While still in school, he worked on

Civil War Stories
Author Info: Ambrose Bierce
Ambrose Bierce is as famous for the circumstances surrounding the end of his life as for his bitter fatalistic prose. Bierce was a journalist/author and a Civil War veteran. In 1913, after the breakup of his marriage and the death of his sons, he set out for Mexico to meet Pancho Villa and observe the Mexican Revolution at first hand. He wrote to a friend: Goodbye, if you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags, please
know that I think it a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down
the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexicoah, that is euthanasia! With that, he disappeared into Mexico and was never heard from again, fueling wild speculation about his fate (i.e., Carols Fuentes' novel The Old Gringo ). A fitting end for an author whose works combined a bleak view of life with elements of mystery. Bierce's Civil War stories are bleak little tales of death and destruction. There's one here that nicely captures his cynical world viewmost of us saw a film version of it in grade school

Amborse Bierce

"Death is not the end," wrote Ambrose Bierce, "there remains litigation over the estate." "Bitter Bierce," as he was often called, was an unapologetic misanthrope who loathed humanity and took pleasure in deflating every inspiring myth or optimistic sentiment with a sharp comment. After serving in the Civil War and seeing up close the depths to which man could sink he became a journalist in San Francisco infamous for cutting one-liners and put-downs. In October 1913, at the age of seventy-one, Bierce decided to quit the United States and observe the Pancho Villa revolution in Mexico. Before leaving, he wrote the following letter to his niece Lora ("Carlt" is her husband, Carlton.)
Ambrose Bierce Bids Farewell to his Niece Lora
"Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me."
Dear Lora, I go away tomorrow for a long time, so this is only to say good-bye. I think there is nothing else worth saying; therefore you will naturally expect a long letter. What an intolerable world this would be if we said nothing but what is worth saying! And did nothing foolish like going into Mexico and South America. I'm hoping that you will go to the mine soon. You must hunger and thirst for the mountains Carlt likewise. So do I. Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me.

Ambrose Bierce - (1842-1914) Meigs County By Sarah Olexsey I. Biography "LIFE, n. A spiritual pickle preserving the body from decay. We live in daily apprehension of its loss; yet when lost it is not missed. The question, "Is life worth living?" has been much discussed; particularly by those who think it is not, many of whom have written at great length in support of their view and by careful observance of the laws of health enjoyed for long terms of years the honors of successful controversy" (Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary"). The Early Years Ambrose Bierce was born in Meigs County, Ohio on June 24, 1842, the tenth child of Marcus and Laura Bierce. Brought up under strict Calvinism, Bierce was seriously affected by the hellfire of this religion. It caused him to have no real affection for any member of his family, except Albert, who would also serve in the Civil War for the Union army and migrate to California (Saunders 11). Bierce left home at age fifteen to work for the Northern Indianian in Warsaw. He was wrongly accused of stealing money there and was forced to leave. After this incident, his family enrolled him in the Kentucky Military Institute.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?)
Ambrose Bierce led an unhappy childhood in Ohio and left home as a bitter and pessimistic young man. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Bierce joined the Union Army; he later brought his military experience vividly to life in some of his best stories. Bierce moved to San Francisco after the war and embarked on a career as a journalist. His "Prattler" column, originally printed in the Argonaut and then the Wasp , was picked up by William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Sunday Examiner in 1886 and provided Bierce with an excellent outlet for his biting wit and many of his most famous short stories. After divorcing his wife in 1891 and losing one son in a gunfight and the other to alcoholism, Bierce disappeared in Mexico in 1913, where legend says he was killed in the revolutionary war. His works include Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891; later retitled

And better, still, " KISS , n. A word invented by the poets as a rhyme for "bliss." His cynical humor and powerful short stories, born from his experiences as a Union officer in the American Civil War, have been described as having a "Northern Mark Twain " style. Of Bierce's famous war tale, An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge (1890), writer Stephen Crane said, "Nothing better existsthe story has everything." In 1887, Bierce joined William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Examiner as a columnist. Known for his lively wordplay and macabre sense of humor , he kept a skull on his desk and claimed it belonged to a rival critic Nicknamed "Bitter Bierce," "the devil's lexicographer," and "Acid Pen," Bierce once observed, "
