An American Hero
I always believed that the infamous Watergate source known as "Deep Throat" was actually a composite of many of Woodward and Bernstein's other informants. I thought they invented the garage-meeting, cigarette-smoking man in order to simplify the drama of "All the President's Men." But the Washington Post has announced that there was a real guy. AP via
Yahoo!News
The Washington Post said Tuesday that a former FBI official, W. Mark Felt, was the confidential source known as "Deep Throat" who provided the newspaper information that led to President Nixon's impeachment investigation and eventual resignation. The paper made its announcement on its Web site after Felt, 91 and living in California, talked to a lawyer who wrote a magazine article for Vanity Fair. Posted by jackhodgson at 06:29 PM

Making the switch
GEWF regular, Sherman, points us to this. SF Chronicle After a lifetime voting for and working for Democratic candidates and independents, I'm finally going to make the switch and become a Republican. The reasons are many, not the least of which is age. I turned 55 recently and, having lived more than half my life, I can't afford to worry anymore about the other guy. It's time for me.

Quotes of the Day for 4 March 2004 - Yawning
A reader, who claims she once yawned in front of one of her cats and caused him to yawn at least fifteen times as a result, requested quotes on yawning. I dismissed this as absurd, but had second thoughts and found to my surprise that I had plenty to work with. Here are the best of the lot. A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death by a joke or worried to death by a frown on the right person's brow.
Charles Hendrickson Brower A yawn is an honest opinion.
George Bernard Shaw The only people for me are the mad ones. The ones who are mad to love, mad to talk, mad to be saved; the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow Roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars.
Jack Kerouac Life is too short, and the time we waste in yawning can never be regained.
Marie Henri Beyle (Stendhal) 'Tis now the very witching time of night
