Born Annie Wood, in London, she married a Church of England clergyman named Besant in 1867, but the marriage failed. An ardent Anglo-Catholic as a girl, she moved towards atheism and became a leading figure in the National Secular Society. In 1877 she published The Gospel of Atheism and was unsuccessfully prosecuted for selling 'obscene literature' - a tract advocating birth control. She campaigned for feminist causes, led the London match girls' strike of 1888, and became a member of the executive committee of the Fabian Society. In 1889 she announced that she had abandoned atheism and had joined the Theosophical Society . She swiftly rose to the highest ranks of the Society and after the death of Madame Blavatsky in 1891 she led the majority faction in the Society. With C. W. Leadbeater

Confounding or Amazing? The Multiple Deconversions of Annie Wood Besant
By Carol Hanbery MacKay After the death of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1891, Besant headed the Theosophical movement in her typically controversial style for more than forty years, writing prolifically on the subject. She was the elected President of the Theosophical Society from 1907 until her death. She also participated actively in the stormy politics of India, where she influenced as much as she provoked Mohandas K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, while that land of ancient tradition struggled to free itself from British colonialism. The Life of Annie Besant . West proffers an interlude chapter on conversion, opening with the words, "With regard to Mrs. Besant's conversion to Theosophy nothing needs more to be stressed than that it was, absolutely, a logical conclusion to all that had gone before. It might almost have been prophesied, had anyone possessed intimate knowledge and subtle perception" (143). Reading the literature about Besant leads to the conclusion that she has not been well served by most of her Western biographers, who appear not to have read her autobiographical texts carefully. Unbiased accounts are in articles like Mark Bevir's "Annie Besant's Quest for Truth: Christianity, Secularism and New Age Thought" in

Annie Besant (1847-1933) Annie Besant, the daughter of William Wood and Emily Morris, was born in 1847 at Clapham, London. Annie’s father, who was a doctor, died when she was only five years old. Therefore she had an unhappy childhood. Mrs. Wood unable to take care of Annie persuaded her friend Ellen Marryat to take responsibility for her upbringing. Later in 1866, at the age of nineteen, Annie married Mr. Frank Besant, who became a vicar in Lincolnshire. They had two children. Annie was deeply unhappy because her independent spirit clashed with the traditional views of her husband. This resulted in their separation in 1873. After leaving her husband Annie completely rejected Christianity and in 1874 joined the Secular Society. It preached ‘free thought’. During the same period she edited the weekly, ‘National Reformer’ along with Charles Bradlaugh, which advocated advanced for the time on the topics such as trade unions, national education, women’s right to vote and birth control. In the 1890s Annie became a supporter of Theosophy, a religious movement founded by Madame Blavatsky in 1875. Theosophy was based on Hindu ideas of Karma and reincarnation with nirvana as the eventual aim. She came under the influence of Theosophical Society which was against discrimination of race, color, gender and preached universal brotherhood. To serve humanity at large was its supreme goal. It is as a member of Theosophical Society of India that she arrived in India in 1893.

Annie Besant's many lives
KUMARI JAYAWARDENA But perhaps most of all we remember the charismatic Annie Besant (1847-1933), who, as her biographers have noted, led many lives. Up to the age of 44, she was in turn a clergyman's wife, atheist campaigner, socialist propagandist, trade union agitator, birth control promoter, critic of capitalism and colonialism and a fighter for women's rights. To socialists and feminists she had two lives: the years up to 1891, which they consider the more important, and her "Indian phase" from 1893 to her death in 1933, which was more problematic. The British Fabian socialist, Sidney Webb, called Annie Besant "one of the 19th century's most remarkable women"; to Bernard Shaw she was "the greatest woman public speaker"; and the Indian political activist Kamladevi Chattopadhyay referred to her as "one of the most outstanding world figures of her time." In 1890 Besant became absorbed with Theosophy and succeeded Helena Blavatsky as the leader of the Theosophists. It was one of the strangest about-turns in modern history. The secretary of the Fabian Society was appalled; he cut out her name from the list of members with the comment "Gone to Theosophy".

Annie Besant - Wood

ANNIE BESANT (1847-1933) Annie Besant was a great woman, a warrior, patriot and a priestess. Many creeds were reconciled in her. Her essential qualities were her unquenchable thirst for freedom. Annie Besant was born in London on st October 1947 , the daughter of William Press Wood, an Irish businessman and Emily Mary Ruche who was also Irish. She was educated privately and married in 1867 to Rev Frank Besant an Anglican clergyman. They had two children, but were divorced in 1873. In 1874 she became an associate of Charles Bradiaugh , a prominent atheist and was soon made co-editor with him of the National Reformer. She was the first prominent woman in England to support birth control and with Bradiaugh was prosecuted by the Government on a charge of obscenity for having published in England the American pamphlet ‘The Fruits of Philosophy’ or ‘The Private Companion of Young Married People’. She and Bradiaugh , in 1885, turned their interests to socialist and labour politics. She edited a journal called ‘Our Corner’ and eventually joined the social democratic federation, a more Marxist organization. She soon became a leading labour organizer, strike leader and reformer, but became an ardent theosophist in 1889 after reading medicine

INTRODUCTION
It goes without saying that Mary Farrell Bednarowski, in her article,
"Outside the Mainstream: Women's Religion and Women Religious Leaders
in Nineteenth-Century America,"[1] deserves credit for drawing
scholars' attention to the high status of women in nineteenth century
non-mainstream religious movements. Four of those are the subject of
her research: Shakerism, Spiritualism, Christian Science, and
Theosophy. In her attempt to answer the question of why women were and
are more successful in such groups, four possibilities were suggested:
1. a reinterpretation of the Christian theological positions by de-emphasizing the Divine Being's masculine traits and gender and 2. by de-emphasizing or denying the Doctrine of the Fall; 3. a rejection of the role of an ordained clergy; 4. an expansion of the role of women in society beyond marriage

The Journals of Soren Kierkegaard,
Theosophy and Politics
by Eldon Tucker [based upon a May 4, 1995 posting to theos-l@vnet.net.] Theosophy is a religious philosophy, sometimes called the Wisdom Tradition. It is not simply an intellectual pursuit, important as the mind is. It is not based upon devotion or worship, nor upon well-intentioned social work. Theosophy is rather a study of the highest form of understanding, a study that necessitates the practice of unselfishness, and of spirituality in the student's life. We are not given specific morals and ethics, but rather taught how to understand ethical thought, and to derive what is right through an understanding of the nature of right and wrong. There is not a rigid adherence to some arbitrary set of rules, like the Judaic ten commandments. Rules are to help the laggards of humanity, those who would fall behind the rest of us, without some external assistance. When we've developed our innate saintliness, we can directly perceive what is right, without having to refer to an external rulebook. With regard to politics, we are taught to obey the law of the land, to be faithful citizens of the nation which we call our home. We must act according to our conscience, but accept the consequences, like Socrates did, in ancient days.

Annie Besant (1847 - 1933)
Annie Besant is often described as a Theosophist, educator and friend of India. While all these words describe parts of her life, they do not say clearly that her whole life seems to have been a courageous search for an all-embracing truth. Born Annie Wood in Clapham, London, she had an unhappy childhood, undoubtedly partly due to her father's death when she was five. She was educated by Ellen Marryat, sister of the noted writer of sea adventures, Frederick Marryat. Although Miss Marryat was a strict Calvinist, she saw to it that Annie's education was not too narrow, and ensured that her charge experienced travel in Europe. Annie's marriage in 1867 to Frank Besant, who became a vicar in Lincolnshire, resulted in the birth of two children, but Annie's increasingly irreligious views led to a legal separation in 1873. Annie became a member of the National Secular Society, which preached 'free thought', and also of the Fabian Society, the noted socialist organisation whose members included George Bernard Shaw and Sidney and Beatrice Webb. The Fabian Society led in turn to the foundation of the Labour Party.
