Berry College With this study MacKay presents her research of women artist figures during mid- and late 19 th It becomes quickly apparent that MacKay is well familiar with her subject matter. Over the last fifteen years, she has extensively published on all four women, yet her book is far from a mere summary of her earlier research. Here, for the first time, MacKay tries to bring together the creative endeavors of these four artists through a theoretical framework that the author coins "creative negativity," the fundamental nature of the female quest. In the first chapter MacKay introduces the reader to her theory about the term "creative negativity" and her understanding of the "female quest." Creative negativity constitutes "a complex of rhetorical and performative techniques by which certain women of the period construct, deconstruct, and reconstruct themselves" in order to step outside the structure of a defined existence. Creative negativity is essentially divided into six interacting elements, MacKay notes: "(1) it grows out of negativity , either philosophical or emotional; (2) it evokes a

Ann Besant, 1847-1933
Nationality : British
Date of Birth : 1 October 1847
Date of Death : 20 September 1933
Identity:
Born in 1847 to Emily Morris and William Wood, Annie Besant spent her upbringing in the care of her mother's friend, Ellen Marryat. She married the Reverend Frank Besant in 1866, though the pair later separated.
Life:
She was a writer and political thinker renowned for her unorthodox religious views. Besant was committed to first atheism, freethought, socialism, secularism and later theosophy - a stance that was to radically differ from the traditional moral opinion of her husband the Rev. Frank Besant. (It was on such grounds that the pair later became separated). In 1874 Annie joined the Secular Society, developing a close relationship with Charles Bradlaugh, editor of the radical National Reformer and leader of the secular movement in Britain. Together they wrote many articles on issues such as marriage and women's rights. However their most famous and controversial project was the publication in 1877 of Charles's Knowlton's book The Fruits of Philosophy , which advocated birth control. Besant later wrote and published her own book advocating birth control entitled The Laws of Population.

"What extracts from the Vedas I have read fall on me like the light of a higher and purer luminary, which describes a loftier course through purer stratum. It is of all ages, climes and nationalities and is the royal road for the attainment of the Great Knowledge." "I would say to the readers of the Scriptures, if they wish for a good book, read the Bhagvat-Geeta .... translated by Charles Wilkins. It deserves to be read with reverence even by Yankees...."Besides the Bhagvat-Geeta, our Shakespeare seems sometimes youthfully green... Ex oriente lux may still be the motto of scholars, for the Western world has not yet derived from the East all the light it is destined to derive thence."

His initial attempt at academic writing was a translation of Veterum Mathematicorum Opera The work for which Rochas was best known, however, evolved out of an encounter in the mid-1860s with a young man who was susceptible to being magnetized. Even as he plunged into his research on ancient sciences and military history, Rochas applied himself with increasing vigor to the psychic and occult sciences. His first important book on psychic science, Eclectic and evolving, tinged with the Orientalist currents running through contemporary Theosophy and Spiritualism, Rochas touched upon a wide range of topics. Following his widely read work on ancient science

A Closer Look at the New Age Movement Fra John Carlo Rosales, FFI The author, a deacon and theology student, writes us: "About a year ago, while I was in the waiting area of a subway station in Rome, I happened to get one of many pamphlets that were scattered around. I was surprised by its contents. It read something like this: "The New Age Movement...We use crystals...occult practices...'It seemed to say that one can try this 'New Age program as an alternative way to solve man's problems. "Some months ago I was able to watch a program by Mother Angelica. The guest speaker was Constance Cumbey, a practising American lawyer. The topic discussed was the New Age movement. I was surprised by what Ms. Cumbey related because I didn't realize that the New Age movement involved transcendental meditation, reincarnation, the use of crystals, and other strange and occult ventures. Constance Cumbey has written a book entitled , published in 1983, which covers at length the New Age Movement, a movement which is rapidly spreading. In West Germany alone there are about 500,000 adherents as well as countless sympathizers.[1] I also learned that the roots of the New Age movement trace back to the Theosophical Society founded by Russian-born Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1875, in New York." Seventh-Day Adventist religious liberty executive
There is little doubt that religious liberty is best exercised within the setting of the secular state. This does not mean the state should be hostile or indifferent to religious bodies, but rather that it must exhibit what has been called a "benevolent neutrality." ...
Freedom of religion also implies the right not to have or profess a religion. This is sometimes overlooked. It is a sad commentary on religion that religionists, probably quite well-meaning at times, have throughout history tried to force fellow human beings into a required religious mold. Apart from the very wrong theological assumptions involved, this is a flagrant violation of the dignity of the human person. Coerced religion is demeaning and of little value.
Bert B. Beach Bright Candle of Courage, 1989, pp. 14-15, quoted from Menendez and Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948)
American historian
You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence.

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

Syllabus for University Course 83 Women, Magic and Power Prof. Robert Mathiesen Spring, 2004/5
University Course 83 Robert Mathiesen MWF, 12:00-12:50 am Salomon Center, room 203 Women, Magic and Power, 1800-1960 Fall, 2004/5 Description of the Course This course examines the lives of about two dozen prominent women in the U.S. and the U.K., all of whom were linked in a network of personal acquaintance, who sought to gain power and to bring about political and social reforms through magic or radically unconventional religion. Among them were mesmerists, spiritualists, religious teachers, physicians, sex reformers, politicians, occultists, actors, and poets. Particular emphasis will be placed on the connections between their occult and spiritual practices and their political and social activism in the context of the women's rights movement and shifts in ideas about femininity in the U.S. and the U.K. Some of the women and men studied in this course wrote about human sexual activity, and at times even examined specific techniques of sexual intercourse with very close attention to the anatomical, physiological and psychological details. Also, some kinds of sexual activity which some of them discussed or recommended (or even practiced) may currently be regarded as immoral, perverted, exploitative or abusive, or may be illegal.

We often wonder who is who...
Who or what is God? Where is God? Well, no one can really answer this question. The word God comes from the word OHG (before 12th century).
