Studies in Occultism

The Signs of the Times
It is intensely interesting to follow season after season the rapid evolution and change of public thought in the direction of the mystical. The educated mind is most undeniably attempting to free itself from the heavy fetters of materialism. The ugly caterpillar is writhing in the agonies of death, under the powerful efforts of the psychic butterfly to escape from its science-built prison, and every day brings some new glad tidings of one or more such mental births to light. We find in the "Lotus" of September, 1887, the following:

A Game of Authorship
Richard Cary in "Some Bibliographic Ghosts of Sarah Orne Jewett" ( Colby Quarterly 8, September 1968, pp. 139-145) says that Jewett appeared rather frequently in "The Contributors' Club." He lists 11 columns from 1878 to 1884 that he is convinced for various reasons are by Jewett. He suggests that several more may have appeared in 1892-3. He does not list Jewett's piece on the funeral of Phillips Brooks, because it was previously listed in Weber and Weber, A Bibliography of the Published Writings of Sarah Orne Jewett (1949). I have looked through these years and have selected a few more that seem at least likely to be by Jewett. However, to my knowledge, we have solid verification of authorship for only a very few pieces. This part of the Jewett Text Project, therefore, offers us a kind of game. What internal and external evidence can be gathered to establish that Jewett was or was not the author of any of these pieces? Cary's opinions and some other possibly relevant facts appear in the notes. Reader comments are welcome. Those I receive will be linked to the appropriate pieces. Send them communications to the site manager.

This bibliography has been in process for more years than I like to remember. Its creation has been immeasurably assisted by grants from the State University of New York Librarians Association and from the Librarians Association of the University of California. All faults in the bibliography are the result of my errors and not of these fine organizations. This bibliography is a work in progress. My original intent, formulated before drastic librarian cutbacks at the University of California, was to create an annotated bibliography. Successive waves of librarian retirements have made the writing of these annotations and additions to this bibliography impossible. Thus there are few entries past 1992; I hope to continue this work at some time in the future. In the meantime, I hope that what has been done will prove useful to scholars of Mrs. Humphrey Ward's work.

Critical Reception
By Richard Dury See also: opinions of other writers back to home page The following brief notes are inserted here to 'mark the place' of a more detailed page that may follow at a later date (any contributions welcome). The critical reception of Stevenson is an interesting study that is related to (among other things) his provocative adoption of popular genres, the uncertain status of 'children's literature' (with which Stevenson is associated); the post-1918 reaction to what had been idealized before; and the opposition of Modernist writers and critics, partly motivated by the aim of giving Modernism (and Modernist critics) a central position in English literature studies. 'The reception of Stevenson's work is usually divided into four periods' (Alblas 1996: 209): 1) During his lifetime. Five works were well received in English-speaking countries: Treasure Island Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Kidnapped The Master of Ballantrae (1889), and Catriona “He stole quietly into the world of fame,”

Grace King called herself a "southern woman of letters." Persistent assumptions about southern women might suggest that she was a living oxymoron. But King's life and work have offered recent critics the opportunity to tease out some of the enormous complexities of privilege and oppression in the American South.
Grace King was born in New Orleans in 1852. She spent most of her life in New Orleans. After the war, her father slowly rebuilt his law practice; it was a great victory for the King children when, in middle age, they were able in 1904 to own a house that fit the family image. King never married; she lived with her (also unmarried) sisters and traveled widely and independently after gaining fame as a writer. Her brand of "local color" struck the right note for late-nineteenth century American readers.
In 1885, King wrote her first story, "Monsieur Motte," which appeared in the

The ugly caterpillar is writhing in the agonies of death, under the powerful efforts of the psychic butterfly to escape from its science-built prison, and every day brings some new glad tidings of one or more such mental births to light. As the New York "Path" truly remarks in its September issue, when "Theosophical and kindred topics . . . are made the texts for novels," and, we may add, scientific essays and brochures, "the implication is that interest in them has become diffused through all social ranks." That kind of literature is "paradoxically proof that Occultism has passed beyond the region of careless amusement and entered that of serious enquiry." The reader has but to throw a retrospective glance at the publications of the last few years to find that such topics as Mysticism, Magic, Sorcery, Spiritualism, Theosophy, Mesmerism, or, as it is now called, Hypnotism, all the various branches in short of the Occult "La Grande Pretresse,"

Mark Twain: A Biography
CHAPTER XCIV
Clemens, realizing his happiness, wrote Dr. Brown: Yours truly, S. L. C. Even Orion, now in Keokuk on a chicken farm, pursued him with manuscripts and proposals of schemes. Clemens had bought this farm for Orion, who had counted on large and quick returns, but was planning new enterprises before the first eggs were hatched. Orion Clemens was as delightful a character as was ever created in fiction, but he must have been a trial now and then to Mark Twain. We may gather something of this from a letter written by the latter to his mother and sister at this period: I cannot encourage him to try the ministry, because he would change his religion so fast that he would have to keep a traveling agent under wages to go ahead of him to engage pulpits and board for him. I cannot conscientiously encourage him to do anything but potter around his little farm and put in his odd hours contriving new and impossible projects at the rate of 365 a year which is his customary average. He says he did well in Hannibal! Now there is a man who ought to be entirely satisfied with the grandeurs, emoluments, and activities of a hen farm. He did presently allow the pension, a liberal one, which continued until neither Orion Clemens nor his wife had further earthly need of it.
