    Abstract:
Advocated by Friedrich Schlegel, romantic irony reveals the poet's mature and self-reflexive attitude in creativity. The romantic poet juxtaposes an intimate, subjective perspective and a detached, objective perspective toward his work. Musset demonstrates this irony in his contention that a true poet should attain both a state of exaltation and one of detachment of his emotions. Musset's armchair dramas, Les Caprices de Marianne On ne badine pas avec l'amour Fantisio , and Lorenzaccio in particular, realize the ideal of Romantic theatre through his sarcastic and comic attitudes and through a reflection of his awareness of the very nature of dramatic art. (1895) dwell on similarities between the man of color's lack of freedom and the colonial woman's social retreat. My comparison of these two texts written more than twenty years apart will shed light on the unique contribution of this prolific and outspoken femme de lettres and voyageuse to contemporary notions of race and foreignness. Bonaparte-Wyse's impressive role in fueling female readers' emerging taste for travel must be measured initially through the correspondence of the journalist and Swiss nomade

CHAPTER XIV BITTER DISILLUSION Some people in this world who turn round and round in a daily circle of small things, like squirrels in a cage, have no idea of the pleasure a young creature, conscious of courage, has in trying its strength; this struggle with fortune loses its charm as it grows longer and longer and more and more difficult, but at the beginning it is an almost certain remedy for sorrow. To her resolve to make head against misfortune Jacqueline owed the fact that she did not fall into those morbid reveries which might have converted her passing fancy for a man who was simply a male flirt into the importance of a lost love. http://humanities.uwe.ac.uk/swhisnet/wales-conference_abstracts.htm
ABSTRACTS Jane Aaron , University of Glamorgan. Radicals and Reactionaries of the Welsh Renaissance This paper will compare and contrast the representations of Wales and of Welsh women in the work of two novelists who published during the years 1889-1908, Gwyneth Vaughan (Annie Harriet Hughes) and Mallt Williams (Alice Matilda Williams). Both women participated in the Welsh Renaissance of the close of the nineteenth century, and both were fervent nationalists and supporters of the Cymru Fydd or Young Wales movement , University of Sheffield, The Power of the Image: Essays on Representation and Sexuality and also on the unconscious structures of patriarchal society, as Laura Mulvey in "Visual pleasure and narrative cinema" has pointed out. Women are constructed as sexual objects for a male subject/spectator. Second, we will examine advertisements in which these conventions cannot really be applied since we are faced with an "ambiguous" representation of women. Adopting a radical feminist perspective, we will trace in these advertisements a clear evolution in the representations of women. Indeed, we will hold the view that these representations, which we will call androgynous, abolish the subject/object distinctions of the advertising system in a patriarchal society but they above all also suppress the dominant sexual identity which limits women to a heterosexual representation. Thus, the cultural characteristics of masculinity and femininity are transcended, so that we are able to speak in terms of individual human beings.
