Thomas Hart Benton, Senator (1782-1858)- When Missouri entered the Union as a state in 1821, Benton became its first Senator, serving in that capacity for thirty years. A devoted follower of Andrew Jackson. Benton’s fight for gold and silver currency won him the nickname “Old Bullion”. He was a stout defender of the Union in Congress, and a noted Congressional orator and historian. In his support of westward expansion, he was responsible for the eastern portion of the Missouri Pacific Railroad starting at St. Louis, thus making the city a nineteenth century railroad center. The most notorious of local duels in St. Louis in that era was fought between lawyers Benton and Charles Lucas in 1817, on Bloody Island in the Mississippi River. Lucas was wounded and survived the first duel but was mortally wounded during the second fight. He was also the father in law to General Fremont (“The Pathfinder” and also the commander at the time when Lyon was defeated at Wilson Creek). The Tall polished red granite memorial was erected in 1902 by the State of Missouri. (Narrative from the Bellefontaine Tour Guide)

In January, 1864, Edgar Conkling, a prominent Republican activist from Cincinnati, Ohio, began circulating a Petition (image and text below) to be sent to the Congress urging that the Government should offer "prompt and liberal aid" for the construction of the Northern Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads in order "to give value and salability" to the Government owned mineral lands in the Pacific states. In a pamphlet* he published about the same time, Conkling stated the results that he hoped would be achieved by the adoption of this policy by the Congress to be as follows:

Entries are alphabetical by street name, and include information on street orientation (east-west, north-south), street name origin, dedication date, and neighborhood(s) through which the street runs (when known).
BADEN AVENUE (E-W). Part of Peter R. Kenrick's 1868 Addition to Baden, it was named for the community of Baden, which was so named by its founder, Frederick Kraft, in 1852 in honor of his home town, the German spa of Baden-Baden. (Baden-Riverview)
BAILEY AVENUE (E-W). Named by landowner George Bailey when he dedicated his First Addition of 1863. (Fairground)
BAISCH LANE (E-W). First appeared as an unnamed alley in the 1889 Shields subdivision of the Bingham Estate. It received its present name in 1928, probably for an adjacent German property owner. (Oak Hill)
BAKER BOULEVARD (N-S). On December 11, 1998, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen approved Board Bill 153 , which renamed the part of Channing Avenue which runs from Bell Avenue to Locust Boulevard to Josephine Baker Boulevard. This was done to honor the St. Louis born entertainer who made her name in France in the period between world wars. (Old North St. Louis-Yeatman)
