Thomas Hart Benton was the U.S. Congress's chief advocate of western settlement for more than thirty years, beginning in 1821. He was well known for his grandiloquent oratory and explosive temper, although he surprised people with conciliatory stands regarding slavery and territorial disputes. Benton favored gaining territory through occupation rather than military conflict. His ideas presaged the Homestead Act of 1862 , which granted land to settlers after they had lived on it and improved it for a period of five years. Benton did all in his power to assist homesteaders, advocating cheap land, the development of transportation routes such as the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, and, later, stagecoach and railroad service. He strongly encouraged the development of overland transportation, both to connect isolated settlers with friends and family and to provide the "skeleton of the future railroad." As chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs, Benton facilitated the removal of Native American tribes to clear the way for white settlement. Following in his footsteps, Benton's son-in-law, (also the first Republican presidential candidate, in 1856) extensively explored the western territories and played a major role in the conquest of California during the Mexican War.

Thomas Hart Benton, 1782-1858
Thomas Hart Benton was a leading U.S. Senator and a national figure in the Jacksonian era. He was born near Hillsboro, North Carolina, on 14 March 1782. His father died in 1791 and his widowed mother moved the family to the Cumberland River Valley of Tennessee in 1801. As a young man, Benton helped farm, taught school, and studied law. After being licensed to practice law in 1806, Benton became state senator in 1809. During the War of 1812, he was made lieutenant colonel, and he served on the staff of Andrew Jackson. After Jackson's support of William Carroll in a duel with Benton's brother, Jesse, Benton moved to St. Louis. Benton associated with the established leadership of St. Louis and became editor of the St. Louis Enquirer in 1818. With the backing of conservative interests, he was elected U.S. Senator from Missouri in 1820. He rapidly became recognized nationally for his support of Jacksonian principles. Although Benton actively supported national programs, especially for the West, he sought to guard against any encroachment of federal power within a state. Over time, Benton came to see the Southern leadership as posing a great threat to national unity.

Search: Finding Lots of Stuff
Search is the complement of database - you dump a bunch of stuff in a big pile, then you rummage through the pile trying to find something. Search has traditionally been supported by the craft handiwork of subject topical experts such as indexers. They built tools that supported your query such as back-of-the-book indexes and library card catalogs. When database first appeared, search became programming a route up and down hierarchies or through the maze of a network database ( Remember Bachman and the 'Programmer as Navigator'? Search was transformed in the modern database period by Ted Codd ( Remember relational databases? ) who suggested targeting information by specifying values or ranges of one or more attributes of a relation ( Translation: specifying a value for a column of a relational table, i.e., flavor = "chocolate" ). His work led to the development of SQL, Structured Query Language. Here is an example of a SQL, Structured Query Language, query:
SELECT name FROM personal_info WHERE salary > $55000 which means select the name data from the personal_info table where the salary value is greater than $55000 The "AND" and "OR" are Boolean operators, named in honor of George Boole, an English mathematician.

Extent: 1,015 slides, 381 negatives, 803 prints, 1 drawing, and 1 rubbing. Biographical Sketch: Mary Claire Randolph Engstrom (1906-1997) is best known for the active role she played in the preservation of historic Hillsborough. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she earned an B.A. degree in English and B.S. degrees in history and political science from Central Missouri State Teachers' College. After earning an M.A. degree in English from the University of Missouri, she moved to moved to Chapel Hill to attend the University of North Carolina. There she specialized in eighteenth century English literature, earning her Ph.D. in 1939. She married Alfred G. Engstrom (UNC Alumni Distinguished Professor of French) the same year. Although her early specialization was in literature, she said it was "only a short step from English literature of the eighteenth century to American history of the same period, because this area was English to start with the same families and everything." In 1959, after she and her husband purchased the historic NashÑHooper house in Hillsborough, she began to focus exclusively on the historical documentation of Hillsborough and its environs. In addition to writing numerous articles on local history, she was instrumental in founding the Hillsborough Historical Society in 1963. She also served as Chairman of the Historic Hillsborough Commission from 1964 to 1966. Engstrom undertook a major project to document 122 old structures and historic sites in the Hillsborough area for the Historic American Buildings Survey (1963 - 1965). Her research helped many of these buildings qualify for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (including the Nash - Hooper House as a National Historic Landmark). It also helped establish two historic districts in Hillsborough, and it resulted in the restoration of many buildings. Other major documentation projects include a survey of cemeteries and graves in Orange County, and a survey of the whole of Orange County for an historical map. Photographs taken in conjuction with her research comprise the bulk of this collection. Engstrom's manuscripts are in the library's Southern Historical Collection.
