DEATH TAKES MELVA (SPARKS)BIDLACK
Your editor has the painful task of recording here the death of hisbeloved wife, Melva Helen Sparks. She died at our home in Ann Arbor,Michigan, on April 19, 1993. Melva had been diagnosed in late November1992 as being terminally ill with colon cancer.
Although not a "paying-member" of The Sparks Family Association, Melvahad contributed to the QUARTERLY in countless anonymous ways over thepast forty years, from her proofreading and correcting to helping in thestuffing and mailing. Furthermore, it was only because her maiden namewas Sparks that your editor developed an interest in the Sparks family'shistory.
Melva Helen Sparks was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on May 17, 1918, theonly daughter of Oral A. and Alice E. (Mace) Sparks. She was a 4thgreat-grand daughter of the William Sparks (born ca. 1725 in Queen AnnesCounty, Maryland, died in 1801-02 in Surry County, North Carolina) whoselife story was featured in the QUARTERLY of June 1991, Whole No. 154.
I should like to express my gratitude to the many members of theAssociation who have expressed their
sympathy to me, and I thank each of you for your patience in accepting mydelay in publishing the 1993 issues of the QUARTERLY.

Barnett did not name his children in his will. Their identities were first discovered by Pauline Skinner, who was given a "scrap of paper", reportedly from the Bible of George BLUE [1.1.1.1.1.4.4], which named the 14 children of Barnett and gave the birthdays of all but the youngest. In 1987, Merle D. Blue conducted a search for more tangible evidence to substantiate this information.

Captains of 1847 1) Capt. John William Bewley: party consisted of 36 wagons when it started out. Left Independence, MO on May 7, 1847. Capt. Bewley was elected the permanent Captain after a shakedown period of several days. Included in the party were the Isaac Bewley family, the Prettymans, the Youngs, and the Victor Wallace family. Several days out of Independence they were joined by a train of 35 wagons from Oskaloosa and a party of American Fur Company trappers bound for the Lakes. Five months and three days after leaving Independence they had their first view of the Columbia. On Oct 10, 1847 they camped at the mouth of the Umatilla and the next morning the party began to separate and follow different paths. Some of the members of the train chose to go to the Whitman Mission where they became embroiled in the Whitman Massacre [follow the links under Missionaries to learn more about this event]

The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.
