From: Rob
Subject: Being a nosy so and so
Several public splits have hit the England team but passed me by -
presumably by not reading the tabloids.
For example I know Gough and Thorpe are both divorced, and I know Flintoff
is engaged to one of the npower girls called Rachel but what other bits of
gossip surround the team? Tres just got married for instance. I heard something about Butcher divorcing - didn't even know he was married. Is this true? Where does one go to find this stuff out? - doubt ITV will do a docusoap called "Cricketers wives"!!! Date: 11 May 2004 22:13:06 From: John Hall Subject: Re: Being a nosy so and so This was about 4 years ago now. He was married to Alec Stewart's sister, and they divorced after he was caught having an affair. It was probably a major reason for his run of poor form at that time. John Hall "George the Third Ought never to have occurred. One can only wonder At so grotesque a blunder." E.C.Bentley (1875-1956)

Clerihews
Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) is remembered mainly for his classic detective story Trent's Last Case and for the verse form that was named after him - the clerihew. It was at the age of sixteen, while he was at St. Paul's School in London, that Bentley first started writing clerihews, as a diversion from school work. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's life-long friend, was at St. Paul's at the same time, and he too wrote clerihews. Here is one of Bentley's original clerihews from this period: Sir Humphrey Davy
Abominated gravy.
He lived in the odium
Of having discovered sodium. Bentley's first collection of verse in this vein was published in 1905 as Biography For Beginners . Further collections appeared in 1929 and in 1939. It was soon after publication of the first volume that the name CLERIHEW became applied to this particular form of light verse. What exactly is a clerihew? Frances Stillman in The Poet's Manual and Rhyming Dictionary defines it as 'a humorous pseudo-biographical quatrain, rhymed as two couplets, with line of uneven length more or less in the rhythm of prose'. Add to this, that the name of the subject usually ends the first or, less often, the second line, and that the humour of the clerihew is whimsical rather than satiric, and there you have a complete definition. Here is a brief selection of my favourite Bentley clerihews: The people of Spain think Cervantes
Equal to half-a-dozen Dantes;

Derek Bentley - Derek Bentley Derek Bentley was an impressionable 19-year-old with a mental age of 11 when, together with Christopher Craig, aged 16, he broke into a warehouse in Croydon, South London, England on 2 November 1952. Craig had a revolver. The two youths were spotted and the police were called. When the police arrived, the two boys hid behind a lift-housing. Detective Sergeant Frederick Fairfax climbed onto the roof and managed to grab Bentley. Bentley managed to break free and is supposed to have shouted "Let him have it, Chris". Craig opened fire with his revolver, grazing Fairfax's shoulder; nevertheless Fairfax managed to arrest Bentley, who told him that Craig had a Colt .45 and plenty of ammunition. Following the arrival of more policemen, a group was sent. Bentley, Illinois Edmund Clerihew Bentley - Edmund Clerihew Bentley E. C. Bentley (1875-1956), who is now best remembered as the inventor of the clerihew, was a popular English novelist and humorist of the early twentieth century. Born in London in 1875, Bentley worked as a journalist on several newspapers, including the Daily Telegraph. His detective novel, Trent's Last Case (1913), was much praised, numbering Dorothy L. Sayers among its admirers. The success of the work inspired him, after only 23 years, to write a sequel, Trent's Own Case(1936). Several of his books have recently been reprinted by House of Stratus [1]. Bentley died in 1956.. Bentley, Kansas

Clerihews Clerihews are short funny poems invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956). They have four lines, which do not have to be of the same length. The first two lines have to rhyme — so do the last two (AABB). The first line has to contain the name of a person. Bentley is said to have designed the form during a boring chemistry lesson. Sir Christopher Wren Said, 'I'm going to dine with some men. If anybody calls Say I'm designing St Paul's.' E. Clerihew Bentley Geoffrey Chaucer Always drank out of a saucer.
