ELGAR - HIS MUSIC POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE Penning the words of
'Land of Hope and Glory'

Thus the words ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ were married to the finale of Elgar’s Coronation Ode . Benson then produced a modified version of the words for performance as a separate piece, as requested by Booseys, these differing considerably from those for the Coronation Ode . It is the chorus from this that is now so familiar to British audiences: Land of Hope and Glory,
Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee,
Who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider
Shall thy bounds be set,
God who made thee mighty,
Make thee mightier yet.
Elgar was later to set three other poems by Benson, In the Dawn and Speak, Music (Opus 41) and Speak my heart

Other descriptions of A C Benson A C (Arthur Christopher) Benson (1862-1925) was one of six children of Edward White Benson , a late nineteenth_century Archbishop of Canterbury . An uncle of the family was philosopher Henry Sidgwick . The Benson family were exceptionally literate and accomplished, but their history was somewhat tragic. A son and daughter died young, and another daughter, as well as A C himself, suffered badly from a mental condition that was probably manic-depressive psychosis, which they had inherited from their father. None of the children ever married. Despite his illness, A C was a distinguished academic and a most prolific author. He was associated with

Benson, E. F. (1867-1940) Born in 1867 to Edward White Benson, Headmaster of Wellington College, later Bishop of Truro, then Archbishop of Canterbury, and Mary Sidgwick, whom W. E. Gladstone once called "the cleverest woman in Europe," Edward Frederick Benson enjoyed a privileged upbringing within his elite Victorian family and, like his siblings, fell easily into prolific writing. By the time of his death in 1940, he had written over one hundred books: tales of the supernatural, books on winter sports (he excelled at figure skating), biographies, autobiographies, but most of all novels, all of them enriched by his tenacious memory, his satiric wit, and his anecdotal charm.
