The Five Towns, made famous in the stories of Arnold Bennett (18671931), arethe towns of, Tunstall, Stoke, Hanley Burslem and Longton in the Staffordshire
http://www.stokeuncovered.co.uk/arnoldb/
A He married Marie Marguerite Soulie, a Frenchwoman in 1907 and in 1912 Arnold Bennett returned to England to settle permanently with his wife Marguerite, who he later separated from. Two books of short stories called The Grim Smile of the Five Towns (1907) and The Matador of the Five Towns (1912) are set in the same area of the Potteries. He had a lifelong devotion for the theatre and wrote several successful plays, notably Milestones (1912, with E. Knoblock. My own thoughts are that one of Bennett's great works was The Card (1911), again set in the Potteries, it's a good piece of writing, this novel was transformed into a film. Another piece of wonderful writing is Mr Prohack (1922). The Five Towns, made famous in the stories of Arnold Bennett (1867-1931), are the towns of, Tunstall, Stoke, Hanley Burslem and Longton in the Staffordshire Potteries. Bennett upset a lot of people who lived in Fenton. Bennett omitted Fenton from his works which included the five towns, and the Fentonions claimed as much right to inclusion as the other five. Stoke-on-Trent is made up of six towns not five as Bennett made out. Even today you can take a visit to Stoke and see the house where Bennett was born in Cobridge, now a Grade II listed building, visit Hope Street in Hanley and see the plaque on a building where Bennett lived. Visit the town of Burslem (Bursley), and walk around the Mother town as depicted in Bennett's work.

Research by Malcolm Henson Arnold Bennett and Physical Deterioration from Malcolm Henson Concerns over the health of the nation, diet and levels of physical exercise are not new. In the early twentieth century the government was shocked to discover the poor state of health of many volunteers for the Boer War, of whom more than a quarter (28.1%) were rejected. These concerns led the government into setting up a committee to examine the problem. Its report on Physical Deterioration (1904) recognized the poor state of health of the nation’s schoolchildren, and argued that exercise and a proper diet were important for young people. Not only would they improve their health and wellbeing, but they would also help to maintain an active workforce and consolidate Britain ’s economic standing. Concern about the nation’s health was also of interest to Arnold Bennett (1867-1931). Bennett is famous as a novelist, playwright, essayist, critic and journalist; he was the author of almost 3,000 articles, many of them set in the Staffordshire Potteries where he was born.
