[Under Construction] The following table lists the selections by the following:
"Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Today in Technology History (To receive "Today in Technology History" by e-mail, click here To read past issues click here March 26 American author Edward Bellamy was born on March 26, 1850. He is mostly remembered for one novel, Looking Backward , which is essentially socialist propaganda with a science fiction twist. The story involves a Boston man who uses a sleeping pill one night in 1887 and reawakens in 2000. Most of the book is a description of the socialist utopia he finds himself in. For our purposes, let us consider how Bellamy envisioned technological change. We now know that countless new technologies in the past century, from cars to computers, transformed society but Bellamy only imagines three minor technological advances. First, in the year 2000 people no longer need umbrellas. Instead, a long "continuous waterproof covering" protects each city sidewalk from the rain. Second, Bellamy imagines that shopping is done at "sample stores." You pick out what you want and your order is transmitted in pneumatic tubes to a central warehouse. A package is filled with your order and "delivered by larger tubes to the city districts," then brought to your home. Finally, Bellamy imagines that every house has a special telephone used to listen to live musical performances. Not only did Bellamy fail to foresee radio, but he did not even know about the phonograph, which was invented a year before his book was published.

Romance and Idealistic Fiction
There are other well-known writers of fiction who belong to New England, at least by birth, whose work does not permit of such definite classification as that of the group just considered; it is not concerned with the local type. Here belongs the name of Jane G. Austin (1831-1894) , whose historical novels, Standish of Standish Betty Alden (1891), etc., deal with Old Colony times. Harriet Prescott Spofford (1835-1921) is the author of numerous romantic tales beginning with Sir Rohan's Ghost (1859). Her more mature novels include Priscilla's Love Story The Maid He Married (1899), and The Great Procession Ellen Olney Kirk (born in Connecticut, 1842) published her first novel, Love in Idleness , in 1877. She has written a score of popular stories, including Through Winding Ways The Story of Margaret Kent Sons and Daughters The Apology of Ayliffe (1904), and Marcia Blanche Willis Howard One Summer , a delicate idyl, appeared in 1875; Guenn , a Breton Romance, in 1882. Clara Louise Burnham (born in Massachusetts, 1854) is the author of numerous works of fiction, beginning with

ATHEISTS FILE AMICUS BRIEF IN PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE SUIT
Web Posted: March 26, 2004 merican Atheists has filed an Amicus or "friend of the court" Brief on in a historic case which challenges the inclusion of the words "under God" in the nation's Pledge of Allegiance California physician and Atheist Michael Newdow took the issue to court after his young daughter was compelled to recite the religionized Pledge during class. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals last summer agreed with Newdow's argument that the practice violated the constitutional separation of church and state. That ruling by a panel of judges led to an uproar throughout the country. Congress passed a slew of resolutions condemning the decision, and President George Bush ordered the U.S. Department of Justice to appeal the case at taxpayer expense. The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) agreed to take up the matter, and oral arguments are scheduled in Washington, D.C. next month. Several groups have now filed briefs supporting the Newdow case.

R EASON * August/September 2000 Looking Back at Looking Backward
Edward Bellamy's famous utopian novel is set in today's America. Are we living his crazy dream? By Tom Peyser On Memorial Day in 1887, Julian West, one of the best-known Americans of his day and a notorious insomniac, sought help for his chronic sleep problems. In the course of his treatment by a Boston doctor, however, West was "mesmerized" so effectively that he never regained consciousness; he has remained in a state of suspended animation for more than 100 years. This September, it is all but certain that West will awaken from his slumber and be brought back to life. To be sure, this amazing triumph is not a scientific marvel but a literary one: West is the protagonist of Edward Bellamy's best-selling utopian novel, Looking Backward: 2000-1887 . In the book, September 10, 2000, is the precise day West rouses from his long nap. Perhaps the most famous time traveler in literary history, West has had a powerful and enduring effect on the terms of American political debate. Published in 1888

It was invented by a Christian Socialist, decreed as an official American ritual by the Congress, and turned into an icon of religious faith against the forces of "godless Communism." How did this happen?
