Looking Backward 2000-1887, written by Edward Bellamy, is argued to be the most popular, most influential Utopian novel ever written. It sold 60,000 copies in 1888, its first year and 100,000 in its next year! The book is one of the two books that sold over one million copies in the 19th century. It is second only to Uncle Tom's Cabin. By offering one no poverty, no unfairness, no evil future, Looking Backward touched millions of hearts. It inspired the organization of Nationalist Clubs named after the system of "Nationalism". The non-Marxist socialism version created in this book influenced the later American labor and political leaders who called themselves socialists. Eugene Debs thanked Bellamy for helping him "out of darkness into light".1 The book also left its mark on Norman Thomas, Upton Sinclair, John Deway, Scott Nearing, Lincoln Steffens, Charls Beard, Carl Sandburg, and Erich Fromm. The echo produced by this book can still be heard today. Edward Bellamy, 1850-1898, was a son of a New England Baptist minister. He received most of his education in the United States and was trained to be a lawyer. After being admitted to the bar, he opened his own law office in Chicopee. His first case caused him to expel a widow for non-payment of rent. It was not the first time he realized something was wrong in his society. Before he could change the environment, he changed himself. He gave up his career as an attorney and never practiced law again. Working as a journalist and editor in New York and Springfield, he observed more and more social problems and offered the resolutions through his novels. Among them, Looking Backward 2000-1887 was regarded as his masterpiece.

by Edward Bellamy
INTRODUCTION
Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy is a novel that takes the reader from the end of the 19th century into an idealistic vision of the 21st century. In many ways Looking Backward is a 19th century romantic novel; yet, on another level the novel is a complex investigation of the possibilities of humanity as the conversations unfold between Julian West, the narrator and time traveler, and Dr. leetee, his 21st century guide and mentor. Through these often Socratic conversations, Bellamy provides the reader with insight into the social problems and ills of the mid-to-late 19th century as well as with a vision of a utopian possibility for the millennium. This rich, multi-faceted novel can be used successfully in a variety of high school courses. Younger students are fascinated with the time travel aspect as well as the predictions about Julian West's future, which is the contemporary reader's present. Older students are able to explore the frame structure and intricacies of Bellamy's themes.
