His memorable achievement is the novel Looking Backward. Edward Bellamy was born on March 26, 1850, in Chicopee Falls, Mass. His father, a Baptist minister, and his mother, a minister's daughter, were both descended from 17th-century New England families. In 1867 Bellamy failed to get an appointment to West Point; instead he studied literature for a year at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. He spent much of the next year in Dresden, Germany, where he observed the prosperity of the state-owned china works. Traveling in England, he was appalled by the misery of the poor victims of what he called "English serfdom." Returning home in 1869, he began to study law in the offices of a Springfield, Mass., firm. He was admitted to the bar in June 1871, opened his own office, took one case, and then completely abandoned the legal profession.

SYNOPSIS!
Francis Bellamy and his cousin and cohort, the author Edward Bellamy, wanted government to take over all schools as a socialist monopoly, end all of the better alternatives, and use government schools to produce an "industrial army" (a Bellamy term) explicitly modeled upon the military in order to nationalize the economy and create a society of totalitarian socialism as described in the book "Looking Backward" by Edward Bellamy. The Bellamy boys actively promoted what they called "military socialism." Edward Bellamy also published the Nationalist Magazine.
Support the "PLEDGE REJECTION ACT" Campaign and fund education about the Pledge, its author and his ilk.
Does the Pledge of Allegiance establish a religion the worship of government?
Public comments about the pledge show that few people know about the pledge's poisonous past. The pledge was written in 1892 by a self-proclaimed National Socialist in the U.S., who wanted government to take over all schools to create an "industrial army" for totalitarian socialism.
Few people know of the discovery by the journalist Rex Curry that the original salute to the flag was the origin of the Nazi salute. Eye-popping photos are only at

Utopian Society Thinkers Edward Bellamy Part 1
About the famous utopian thinker Edward Bellamy and history of his planned utopia Boston in the year 2000.
UTOPIANS-DREAMERS EDWARD BELLAMY (1850-1898) A sensitive, reticent recluse, Edward Bellamy was pushed into the limelight after his book Looking Backward captured the popular imagination and became a blueprint for reform in the U.S. He had not written the book for that reason; in fact, he said, "The idea was of a mere literary fantasy, a fairy tale of social felicity. There was no thought of contriving a house which practical men might live in, but merely of hanging in midair far out of reach of the sordid and material world of the present, a cloud palace for humanity." Bellamy was born the son of a Baptist minister in Chicopee Falls, Mass., where he lived for most of his life. As an adolescent, he was intrigued with war as a kind of giant chess game. He even tried to get into West Point, but was rejected for physical reasons. In later life, he was a pacifist. A trip to Europe, where he visited city slums, awakened Bellamy to the awful conditions under which the poor lived. He was sensitized forever after that the plight of the oppressed.

Utopian Society Thinkers Edward Bellamy Part 2
About the famous utopian thinker Edward Bellamy and history of his planned utopia Boston in the year 2000.
UTOPIANS-DREAMERS EDWARD BELLAMY (1850-1898) Bellamy had been ill with tuberculosis for some time, and doctors had recommended a warmer climate for him, but he refused to move until he finished Equality, a tractlike novel designed as a sequel to Looking Backward. By the time he got to Colorado, it was too late, and he returned home to die at the age of 48. His Utopia: BOSTON IN THE YEAR 2000 Julian West, the romantic hero of Looking Backward, woke up in Boston in the year 2000 after a 113-year hypnotic spell. Boston was a far different place than it had been more than a century before. The head of the country, called the president, was the leader of a huge industrial army, for all workers were employed by the state. People were educated until they were 21, when they went into menial service for a short time. After that, they took examinations to qualify for professional schools; if they failed, they were given jobs for which they were suited. The most boring jobs had the shortest hours. Women had rights equal to men's. Though people in this world still rode in coaches, they enjoyed modern conveniences, tooa kind of radio piped in by telephone, paper clothes, television and movies, airplanes, electric heating, and pollution-free air.

The Best of American Fiction: Early Period
Content last modified February 1995
Introduction
Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all.
Henry David Thoreau Thoreau's advice seems particularly applicable to today's world where the proliferation of all forms of literary material creates a dilemma for the person attempting to choose something to read. With this advice in mind, the Network Services Section has produced a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction. This first minibibliography of the series lists fiction of America's early period, particularly of the mid-to-late- nineteenth century when the American novel came of age. American writers had finally freed themselves from imitating the themes and characterizations of the English and established their own literary form with two great masterpieces: Herman Melville's Moby Dick and Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. From these novels, American literature moved on to the social and political satire of Mark Twain in Huckleberry Finn and the new realism of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris. Books chosen for this minibibliography are based upon the recommendations offered in Good Reading, edited by J. Sherwood Weber; The Reader's Advisor, 12th edition, volume 1; "Darien's First 'Classics' Collection," from Library Journal, November 15, 1981; and American Novel, Brown to James, edited by Frank N. Magill.
