Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Beethoven has achieved iconic status as a composer. In the musical community, this position has been achieved due to the immense, even revolutionary, incluence he has had on the development of music as the pivot point from the Classical to the Romantic eras. His symphonies in particular demonstrate this development, themes from the 5th and the 9th being instantly recognisable, the latter used as the European Anthem. His image is also well-known among non-musicians, with his features of intense concentration and unruly hair. Beethoven's deafness has served to underline this position as icon, both because it makes his achievements seem more remarkable, but also because it emphasises the popular picture of a composer whose inspiration comes from within, those inner thoughts and sounds are elaborated and pieced together into the most intricate musical canvas. Beethoven was born in Bonn in Germany and, like Mozart , into a musical family whose father and grandfather were both singers. Though not to the same extent perhaps as Mozart, he was also a musical prodigy, whose father had taught him music at an early age (and some say bullied his son to further his own ambitions), and this education was continued by court musicians such as Neefe. His early talent was demonstrated particularly at the keyboard, as pianist, organist and harpsichordist, although he also showed talent on the violin. He studied composition with

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Symphony no. 9 in D minor, opus 125, Fourth movement 23:22
Text: portions of "Ode to Joy" by Friedrich Schiller I wrote this analysis of the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to aid my students in following along as the music played. The timings are based on the classic 1952 recording conducted by Arturo Toscanini (RCA Victor Gold Seal) 60256-2-RG), but the timings could be adjusted to fit any other recording. Please keep in mind that this was written by a non-musician for non-musicians in a general humanities class and does not pretend to be a technical analysisjust a way of helping beginning listeners to classical music appreciate what is going on. Elapsed time 0:00 The movement opens agitatedly as the orchestra picks up fragments of one theme after another from the previous three movements, as if seeking a satisfactory vehicle for its expression; but each is discarded in turn. 1:15 The first seven notes of the main theme to come are tentatively uttered, but it too is abandoned as the search continues. 2:17 Once again the theme begins, this time in the woodwinds, but it soon breaks off.

50. Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827)
A biography of Ludwig van Beethoven, the founder of the modern school of orchestralmusic.
http://www.usefultrivia.com/biographies/ludwig_van_beethoven_001.html
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Opus 1 appeared in Vienna, 1795. A few years afterwards his deafness began, the result of an obscure disease which embittered the composer's life and cut him off from mankind and the enjoyment of his own art. The period of his chief masterpieces is 1800-1814, during which were produced Fidelio , his only opera, and the principal symphonies, except the great Choral Symphony which is later. Franz Hueffer writes: "Beethoven's compositions, 138 in number, comprise all forms of vocal and instrumental music, from the sonata to the symphony, from the simple song to the opera and oratorio. In each of these forms he displays the depth of his feeling, the power of his genius; in some of them he reached a greatness never approached by his predecessors or followers." His childhood and youth were a continued scene of toil; he began music in his fourth year under his father, a musician of irregular habits, and began to compose and play in public when 11 years old. About this period he was trusted to play the organ as deputy, and to accompany the opera rehearsals; meanwhile he was studying, besides clavier, viola, and organ, Latin, French, and Italian. In the last of three trios, his published

    Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Ludwig van Beethoven received his musical education by his father Johann, who was a singer and instrumentalist in the service of the Elector of Cologne at Bonn. In 1787 Beethoven moved to Vienna where he worked and studied with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn. In 1795 he made his first public appearance at the Vienna Burgtheater. He was strongly bound to aristocracy and the Viennese society and Beethoven often dedicated his work to them. Their support or employment left Beethoven a lot of time to life and work as a free artist.
In 1794 he first noticed an impairment in his hearing, which was diagnosed incurable in 1802. Around this period he composed the "Eroica Symphonie" and the "Symphonie No.5" Beethoven hearing problem increased rapidly from 1801 to 1818. In 1814 he presented his one and only opera "Fidelio", in 1815 he conducted his last concert and around 1818 he went completely deaf. In his late period, nearly deaf he composed the "Choral Symphony, No.9".
