Beethoven, Ludwig van
COMPOSER (GERMANY) BORN 16 Dec 1770, Bonn: Bonngasse 20 - DIED 26 Mar 1827, Wien: Schwarzspanierstrasse 15
GRAVE LOCATION Wien: Zentralfriedhof (Gruppe 32 A, nummer 29)
Son of a singer of the Hofkappelle in Bonn. In 1790 he met Joseph Haydn in Bonn. Haydn became his teacher until 1794 and afterwards he was taught by Albrechtsberger and Salieri. In 1795 he gave his first public performance at the Burgtheater in Vienna. His close ties with noblemen soon enabled him to live as a free artist.
He explored new musical paths with his symphonies and would influence a next generation of composers, among them Brahms. In 1794 he started having trouble hearing. After 1801 this became worse and around 1818 he was completely deaf. In 1815 he performed for the last time.
After his death in 1827 the actor H. Anschütz read a funeral speech written by F. Grillparzer. Beethoven was buried at the Währinger Friedhof in Vienna. When that was closed in 1888 his remains were moved to the Zentralfriedhof in Vienna.

Sketches for the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony (no. 6 in F Major, op.68)
Ludwig van Beethoven, 1808
British Library Add. MS 31766, f.2
Ludwig van Beethoven was a very prolific composer, producing many symphonies, concertos, piano sonatas, violin sonatas, an opera, masses and several overtures. The sketch shown here dates from 1808 and is an early working of the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. Beethoven was born in December 1770 in Bonn, Germany. Brought up in a musical, though dysfunctional, family, his talent was recognized by the time he was 20 and in 1792 he was sent to study with Josef Haydn in Vienna. The young Beethoven was a great success in Vienna, managing to make a good living from concerts, commissions and his published scores. However, by 1798 he had begun to notice that his hearing was becoming impaired. As it worsened he performed less and less, and his last public appearance was in 1814.

Ludwig van Beethoven
"...my misfortune pains me doubly, in as much as it leads to my being misjudged. For me there can be no relaxation in human society; no refined conversations, no mutual confidences. I must live quite alone and may creep into society only as often as sheer necessity demands; I must live like an outcast. If I appear in company I am overcome by a burning anxiety, a fear that I am running the risk of letting people notice my condition...such experiences almost made me despair, and I was on the point of putting an end to my life - the only thing that held me back was my art. For indeed it seemed to me impossible to leave this world before I had produced all the works that I felt the urge to compose, and thus I have dragged on this miserable existence..."

Mozart aside, Beethoven is the most famous classical composer of the western world. He is remembered for his powerful and stormy compositions, and for continuing to compose and conduct even after he began to go deaf at age 28. The ominous four-note beginning to his Fifth Symphony bom bom bom bommmmm is one of the most famous moments in all of music. Beethoven never married. After his death his friends found letters to a lover he called "Immortal Beloved," whose identity has never been discovered... Beethoven's precise date of birth is unknown; he was baptized on 17 December 1770, and it is presumed he was born on 16 December. FOUR GOOD LINKS

Welcome to the Unheard Beethoven!
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, composer to ever live. Most people are familiar with a few of his works, if nothing more than the beginning of the Fifth Symphony, the Finale of the Ninth Symphony and the "Moonlight" Sonata. Beethoven of course wrote a great deal more than those well-known works; one catalog of his compositions runs to 849 separate items. While several hundred of these works have been recorded on one medium or another, there still remain literally hundreds of other works which have never been recorded at all, or which have never been published in widely available editions or in some cases, never published at all! There are thus hundreds of Beethoven works which, until now, have been available only to scholars and specialists. This website endeavors to make all of Beethoven's unrecorded music readily accessible to the public. Now YOU may judge for yourself as to whether these pieces deserve a wider hearing and the ability to join the repertoire. These never-before-heard works are now available to anyone with a computer, a modem and a soundcard, in the form of MIDI files. Our rule of thumb has been that if a work has been recorded and is readily available, we will not produce a MIDI file, concentrating instead on the works which are not otherwise available. At present, over twelve hours of Beethoven's music is available on this website and in no other listenable format.
