There is much to be said for failure. It is more interesting than success.
Beerbohm, Sir Max
Failure

Men of genius are not quick judges of character. Deep thinking and high imagining blunt that trivial instinct by which you and I size people up. Beerbohm, Sir Max Genius To give an accurate and exhaustive account of that period would need a far less brilliant pen than mine. Beerbohm, Sir Max History and Historians One might well say that mankind is divisible into two great classes: hosts and guests. Beerbohm, Sir Max Guests The dullard's envy of brilliant men is always assuaged by the suspicion that they will come to a bad end. Beerbohm, Sir Max Greatness Nobody ever died of laughter. Beerbohm, Sir Max Laughter Good sense about trivialities is better than nonsense about things that matter. Beerbohm, Sir Max

The caricatures (mainly in monochrome) are of the prime political figures and events of the era right after World War I, including: Lloyd George; Balfour; Lytton Strachey; Woodrow Wilson; Joseph Conrad; Bernard Shaw; Winston Churchill; et. al. First American edition.
Sir (Henry) Max(imilian) Beerbohm was born in London, the son of a Lithuanian corn merchant, and half-brother of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. As a student at Charter-House School and Merton College, Oxford he developed a talent for writing and caricature. He published his first volume of essays (many of which had appeared previously in the 'Yellow Book') in 1896 with the ironic title 'The Works of Max Beerbohm'. He succeeded Bernard Shaw as the drama critic of 'The Saturday Review'. In 1910 he married an American actress, Florence Kahn (d.1951). Except during the World Wars they lived together in Rapallo, Italy. His writings and art splendidly combine gentle humor, elegance, wit and style. "I was a modest, good-humoured boy.

31 Tite Street Max Beerbohm British writer and caricaturist jpg: local Sargent holding "court" at his studio. To be painted by Sargent was to be painted by the best and come they did, lined up for their portraits, Royalty and society women each with their own footman. The Joke here was that Sargent absolutely hated the idea of "holding court" at his studio. The inevitable throng that would accompany a sitter proved time and again to be distracting. The expression on his face here, though you can't quite see it very well, is of utter befuddlement or shock.
Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm, or "Max" was a writer and caricaturist. He was born in London, and had a half-brother by the name of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. In 1907 Sargent would sketch Tree's daughter. According to the Hon. Evan Charteris, Max was one of Sargent's favorite writers the two, obviously, were good friends. Max studied at Oxford, and published his first volume of essays under the title
