Anthology of ROMANTICISM
Selected and Edited by Ernest Bernbaum
Third Edition Revised and Enlarged.
New York: Ronald Press, 1948.
[from] Preface
These selections from the voluminous literature of the English Romantic Period (c. 1783-1832) were not chosen merely for historical reasons, or because they were popular in their own time (some were so, others were then almost unknown). This is not an herbarium, nor a museum of fossils; it is not a collection of flora or fauna, once alive, but now dead. It is an anthology in the true sense of the word, namely a gathering together of the choicest living flowers, the still unfaded efflorescence of the vast and fecund literature of English Romanticism. I have tried to reject any passage that is trash, though it may have been often included in previous books of selections, or though it may still have some curious antiquarian interest. Even in the brief section drawn from the Pre-Romantic Movement, the main purpose of which is historical, I have admitted very few specimens (fewer than in previous editions) that are of historical interest only.

“I help clients who have achieved a certain economic status buy adult things,” antiques consultant Philip Hewat-Jaboor of London says of his career as a decorative and fine arts adviser helping European and American collectors acquire antique furniture, objects, fine arts, statues, marble chimneypieces and rare vases. Such advisers have existed since centuries past when pharaohs and kings amassed riches and plundered other kingdoms in their quest to attain vast amounts of wealth. Nowadays, the antiques advisory business is a lot more tame, and Hewat-Jaboor’s challenge is not so much acquiring antiques such as those shown on this page as educating clients on the endless possibilities in collecting and paying appropriate prices. “Clients may say they want English, but I’ll show them French and they realize they love it,” he says. “It’s about waking people up to unusual one-off things that are so exciting to find.” Discoveries have included a circa 1770 white marble English chimneypiece mounted with an elaborate running frieze of sunflowers and foliage cast in gilt bronze by Matthew Boulton, the renowned English metalworker; a Sèvres porcelain vase, one of three made in a deep violet, that has French royal provenance; and an early-19th-century Russian gilt-bronze mounted porphyry vase, which, Hewat-Jaboor later confirmed, was the mate to an Imperial piece made for Alexander I. “I knew it was important when I bought it, and I sold it to a longtime client. Then I saw its twin sitting in a Russian museum,” recounts Hewat-Jaboor, who has a reputation for uncovering great works of art.

There is reason, however, to believe that this was a flight of imagination. It is an impressive work, full of fantastic and magnificent conceptions, rising occasionally to sublimity. His other principal writings are Memoirs of Extraordinary Painters (1780), a satirical work, and Letters from Italy with Sketches of Spain and Portugal Beddoes, Thomas Lovell The Improvisatore , which he afterwards endeavoured to suppress. His next venture was , which was published in 1850 with a memoir by his friend, T. F. Kelsall. Beddoes had not the true dramatic instinct, but his poetry is full of thought and richness of diction. BALLANTYNE MSS.
The Ballantyne mss., 1934-1972, are letters written to Charles Ballantyne, 1903- , of Sandbed House, Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland, about a subject of common interest, the life and works of William Beckford, 1760-1844, novelist, man of letters and art collector, who was the author of the Gothic novel, Vatek and several travel sketches. Included in this collection are notes by Beckford inscribed on two volumes once owned by him and later the property of Charles Ballantyne. The calendar cards for these notes follow this description. Accompanying the collection are two portraits. One is an engraving of William Beckford, published in 1823 by G. Smeeton, Arcade, Pall Mall. The other is a photograph of a portrait in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, once believed to be that of Beckford but later rejected. Formerly in Hamilton Palace, South Lanarkshire, now in the National Museums of Scotland The celebrated collector William Beckford (1760-1844) bequeathed the bulk of his collection to his younger daughter, Susan Euphemia, who had married the 10th Duke of Hamilton in 1810. Many items were sold over the next few years, but a very large part of Beckford's remaining collection -including silver made specially for him -was transported to the various Hamilton family houses and eventually ended up at Hamilton Palace. Beckford was particularly interested in earlier artistic styles and the teapot and stand are a curious combination of European and Eastern models. They are certainly influenced by Chinese ceramics and possibly by Indian hardstones and Chinese bronzes. Beckford and his friend and agent Gregorio Franchi probably supplied Storr with notes and either sketches or prints for these exceptional items. Both pieces were purchased by the National Museums of Scotland in 1977, with support from the National Art Collections Fund. Susan Beckford

Beckford's Tower
Beckford's Tower was designed by Henry Edmund Goodridge in 1825 and completed in 1827 for William Beckford (1760-1844), one of the nation's most accomplished and interesting characters. The 120-foot neo-classical Tower, which enjoys uninterrupted views of the countryside, was constructed as a study retreat and to house Beckford's precious collection of art and rare books. The surrounding Victorian Cemetery, containing William Beckford's tomb, was in his lifetime part of a beautiful pleasure garden known as 'Beckford's Ride', which ran from his house in Lansdown Crescent up to the Tower at the top of Lansdown Hill. The Tower is now home to a museum collection displaying furniture originally made for the Tower, alongside paintings, prints and objects illustrating William Beckford's life as a writer, collector and patron of the arts. Visitors can follow in Beckford's footsteps and climb the spiral staircase to the beautifully restored Belvedere and experience the spectacular panoramic view of Bath.

Writer and politician Few men attained greater celebrity during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries than William Beckford, the wealthiest man in England. With enormous wealth as his Aladdin's lamp, he decided to make his Arabian dreams come true. By the time he died at the venerable age of 84, he had built the loftiest domestic residence in the world, had assembled a virtual harem of boys, had his own militia to protect his Fonthill estate of 6,000 acres, had written the first Oriental-Gothic horror novel in English literature, and had become the most scandalous connoisseur of hedonism in the modern world. His society bemusedly tolerated most eccentrics even nouveau riche ones - but they chose to ostracize this remarkable personality, dubbing him "The Fool of Fonthill." Beckford's father, twice Lord Mayor of London, was the richest man in England, with extensive holdings in the cloth industry, property, government bonds, and sugar plantations. As a result, Beckford received a brilliant education, and was widely learned in French, Latin, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, philosophy, law, literature and physics by the age of 17. His private piano teacher was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - at least that is the legend, too romantic to be discouraged. He was being brought up as an empire builder, but his father died when Beckford was only ten, leaving him with no political ambition, and a millionaire's taste for pleasure.
