Beckford cabinet
One of a pair of magnificent cabinets made for William Beckford (1760-1844) Special loan: the loan of this exhibit has been made possible with the generous assisitance of Mrs Edmond J. Safra. William Beckford, the creator of the Gothick Fonthill Abbey and a most discriminating connoisseur, had this gorgeous cabinet made in Paris around 1825. It is richly encrusted with hardstones and luxuriously mounted in gilt bronze and incorporates panels of hardstones made at the celebrated Gobelins workshops in Paris in the late 17th Century. The cabinet embodies the opulent French style - colourful and intensely decorative - that was made fashionable by patrons such as the Prince Regent. The loan of the Beckford cabinet gives visitors to the Gilbert Collection a rare opportunity to see one of the most sumptuous pieces ever commissioned by a British patron in Paris and to compare it with the opulent clock cabinet, also decorated with hardstone panels, commissioned by Beckford's son-in-law, the Duke of Hamilton, and with other material ordered by Beckford now in the Gilbert Collection. current Director's choice - Table with Flora of the Two Sicilies previous choice - Frederick the Great Snuffbox previous choice - Storr Basket previous choice - Suki Chalice ... home the galleries

Storr basket
Magnificent silver-gilt basket by Paul Storr, 1797-98. The basket is in the form of plaited ears of wheat. The pierced. rim foot is chased with trellised basketwork with plaiting above and below. The spreading sides are formed as forty groups of three ears of wheat plaited together, the curling ears forming the border. A band of reed-and-tie ornament is applied around the lower part of the basket. The underside of the plain base is engraved with a crest. The crest is that of Beckford, for William Beckford (1760-1844). He is best known for Fonthill Abbey, a vast "Gothick" mansion that he built in Wiltshire during the first decade of the nineteenth century and whose spire was taller than that of Salisbury Cathedral. He devoted himself to filling the house with works of art until 1822, when the failure of his West Indian sugar plantations forced him to sell the house and most of its contents to John Farquhar. Farquhar himself sold the contents in the following year in one of the most famous auctions of the nineteenth century. Beckford's taste for exquisite workmanship and sumptuous materials was largely out of tune with the times: William Hazlitt acidly described the house as "a Cathedral turned into a toy shop, an immense Museum of all that is most curious and costly and, at the same time, most worthless in the productions of art and nature"

Vathek and Other Stories:
A William Beckford Reader
Edited by Malcolm Jack Beckford's Gothic novel Vathek , an Arabian tale, was originally written in French when the author was twenty-one. Published in English in 1786, it was one of the most successful of the oriental tales then in fashion. William Beckford (1760-1844) inherited a large fortune and, at the age of nineteen, went on a tour of Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. He was a Member of Parliament and a traveller who spent large sums of money collecting rare books, curiosities and paintings for the embellishment of his Gothic Extravaganza, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in opulent seclusion until forced by bankruptcy to sell it in 1822. This edition makes available to a new generation of scholars and general readers, the originality of Beckford's ideas, and the excellence of his prose.

he Dulwich Picture Gallery are hosting an exhibition of the work of William Beckford (1760-1844). Part of Oriflamme's remit is to feature coverage of medievalism and Willam Beckford was one of the greatest cultural medievalists of the early nineteenth century. " William Beckford is one of the greatest names in the history of collecting. In 1822, his decision to sell the contents of Fonthill Abbey caused a feeding frenzy. Fonthill Abbey revealed Beckford as a leading advocate of Gothic architecture, design and history., but his taste was broader than that- he had a passion for the Medieval period that stretched to include oriental, Islamic, and Renaissance work. Beckford ignited the enthusiasm and taste of a generation of architects and designers.
He inherited his family's Jamaican sugar plantations and was known as England's wealthiest son. he completed a Grand Tour of unparalled lavishness and became a figure of international repute as a young man, not, least as the author of the sensational novel 'Valthek', which he wrote at 21, signalling the arrival of a person of truly exotic character and taste." Colin Spencer, author of 'Homosexuality-A History" described Beckford as " Quite the most controversial figure at this time (who) managed to break all the rules, but in doing so was ostracised by English Society. Nicknamed the 'Fool of Fonthil' William Beckford was the richest man in England.....At the age of nineteen Beckford met and fell in love with William Courtney, aged ten, a pupil at Westminster school and regarded as one of the most beautiful youths in England. Two years later Beckford married a Scottish heiress with whom he had two chidlren. He remained close to Courtney.

Review
About 35 minutes from London, tucked in a corner between the M25 and the A3, and somehow miraculously unscathed, is one of the most astonishing landscapes to have been produced in the middle of the 18th Century. It was created by Charles Hamilton and is noteworthy, not only in its own right, but also as the inspiration for two other gardeners of note, Henry Hoare at Stourhead and Alderman Beckford at Fonthill, father of the more celebrated William, who would out-do all three in the ambition of his projects. The first part of this most diverting volume examines the friendships, rivalries and extravagances of the resourceful trio who vied with each other in their fanciful concepts, but it is in his researches around the young Beckford that author and garden historian Thacker comes into his own. Labelled by Byron and then by himself, as ‘England’s wealthiest son’ his hopes of titles and political advancement were dashed when details of his relationship with his cousin, Master ‘Kitty’ Courtney were revealed, resulting in his effective banishment on a very extended Grand Tour. Thacker gives us details of his life and travels from his observations on the mountains and valleys which would inspire his later creations. He confessed to Lady Hamilton, Emma’s predecessor, “I fear I shall never be half so good for anything in this world but building towers, forming gardens”. Prophetic words for the man who would later extend his father’s vision to create a personal paradise at Fonthill Abbey, which must rank as one of the most extravagant private commissions ever executed in this country, all the more romantic since it collapsed so soon after its creation.

Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft. Frankenstein, or, The modern Prometheus West Hatfield, Mass. : Pennyroyal, 1983, c1984. The University of Arizona’s Library’s Special Collection does not own an 1818 first edition of Shelley’s Frankenstein . However there are only 350 copies of the Pennyroyal limited edition displayed here; its text is based on a copy of the original three-volume 1818 edition. The second edition of Frankenstein , 1823, was in two volumes and for the third, 1831, Mary Shelley revised the text into a single volume work. It was the 1831 edition that included the first illustrations, including an engraved frontispiece showing the monster first beginning to move and Frankenstein rushing from the room. James Whale’s 1931 film version of Frankenstein opened the market to many illustrated editions of the book in the 1930’s. Booksmith Barry Moser designed and illustrated this Pennyroyal edition. His woodcuts shape the Monster from darkness giving him a form simultaneously ghastly in its malice and transfixing in its suffering. Moser’s prints are arrayed throughout this exhibition.

William Beckford
William Beckford, , English novelist and eccentric. Beckford is now best known for his Gothic-influenced oriental tale The History of the Caliph Vathek Vathek , originally published in French, tells the story of the deranged eponymous caliph's vicious life and final descent into hell. In his own day, though, his fame depended at least as much upon his unconventional life. He had scandalous romantic liaisons with a young boy and with the wife of his cousin, and was known to participate in black magic. In he built Fonthill Abbey, a pseudo-Gothic structure similar in spirit to Walpole 's Strawberry Hill.
