[pounds sterling]50 The strength of the volume, however, is in the essays on Beckford as a collector and the catalogue entries for these virtuoso pieces are meticulously detailed. On the architectural side David Watkin's essay on 'Beckford, Soane and Hope: The Psychology of the Collector' is original and interesting in describing how Beckford was not the 'unique and exotic creature' as has commonly been supposed, but shared many of the intellectual and literary tastes of his two contemporaries as well as the concept of the house as a museum. Beckford's personal taste, however, for the overwrought works of art of the Renaissance and Mannerist eras separates him from the more fastidious collections of Hope and Soane. MARGARET RICHARDSON

Beckford, William (1760-1844) Extremely wealthy and connected to the aristocracy, British author and connoisseur William Beckford was ostracized by English society for the last sixty years of his life because of his homosexuality. Beckford's father was alderman and lord mayor of London, and his mother, connected by marriage to the Dukes of Hamilton, a stern and unrelenting Calvinist. Beckford's father died when he was ten, and his mother decided that it would be best not to risk sending her delicate son away to school. She hired a series of tutors and monitored his education herself. Beckford early on displayed an interest in art and music, and especially in the exotic Oriental arts of the Arab world. As he entered adolescence, he was lucky that one of his series of tutors was Alexander Cozens, whose own fascination with Eastern lore encouraged Beckford's own. Sponsor Message.

Patronage I: The Western World from Ancient Greece until 1900
page: Several influential queer male patrons also exploited art collection and interior decoration as forms of personal expression; in doing so, they also transgressed gender boundaries, for the adornment of living spaces generally was considered a feminine concern. By surrounding themselves with beautiful and unusual objects, these patrons indicated their commitment to sensual pleasures and rejection of moralistic restrictions. Their exceptional refinement of taste can be correlated with their patterns of behavior. By employing gestures that were considered extravagant and "effeminate," they flaunted conventions and contributed to the formation of a distinct, socially recognizable identity. Historians (including gay historians) often have dismissed these patrons as weak individuals who withdrew from active engagement in their societies. However, their bold rejection of social standards and their creation of queer environments deserve to be evaluated in a more favorable light. Two prominent examples of this type of patron will be discussed here. Sponsor Message.

BECKFORD, WILLIAM Beckfords wealth and large expenditure, his position as a collector and patron of letters (he bought Gibbons library at Lausanne), his literary industry, and his reputation as author of Vathek, make him an interesting figure in literary history. He had a seat in parliament from 1784 to 1793, and again from 1806 to 1820. He left two daughters, the eldest of whom was married to the 10th duke of Hamilton. Eighteenth-Century Studies - Volume 36, Number 1, Fall 2002, pp. 93-97
The Johns Hopkins University Press

Excerpt
Treasures viewed, not by poets and connoisseurs, but by the unseeing public gaze, were treasures polluted, and when Beckford in 1822 staged his most spectacular performance of all, the auction view for the proposed sale of the Abbey's contents, the crush and the almost fairground atmosphere, as well as the incomprehension of the unsophisticated, compromised the Abbey beyond redemption. "I am rid of the Holy Sepulchre, which no longer interested me since its profanation," he wrote when announcing to Franchi the pre-auction sale of the Abbey and its contents to John Farquhar, an entrepreneur and miser for whom the Abbey was to provide its own theatrical display three years later, when the great tower collapsed. Beckford's collections are summarily documented in their various sale catalogues. An impressive number...
