George Louise Becke [1855-1913], better known as Louis Becke, was a short-story writer and novelist prominent in the 1890s. He was a frequent traveller to the South Pacific islands, and his experiences are reflected in his many works. His time in the Pacific includes a stay on Beru (Kiribati) in the 1880's, where he was shipwrecked, as well as time in the Marshalls and further afield in the company of Bully Hayes. KIRIBATI , (pronounced like kee-ree-bus , the native pronunciation of Gilberts ) is a small island republic in the middle of the Pacific, with a population of about 70,000 Micronesians. Formerly part of the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony, Kiribati became independent in 1979, while I was there on leave for a year from my graduate studies at the University of Hawaii, doing linguistic research for the Kiribati Peace Corps Language Handbook

Louis (George Lewis) BECKE (1855-1913) Read ebooks by Louis Becke By Reef and Palm, a collection of short stories, established Becke's literary reputation. In all he published over 30 books including short stories, novels, biography and reminiscences. In the introduction to By Reef and Palm (included in the ebook) the Earl of Pembroke wrote of Becke, "born at Port Macquarrie in Australia, where his father was clerk of petty sessions, he was seized at the age of fourteen with an intense longing to go to sea." Pembroke went on to say that "every one who has a taste for good stories will feel, I believe, the force of these. Every one who knows the South Seas, and, I believe, many who do not, will feel that they have the unmistakable stamp of truth." The introduction to By Reef and Palm provides a brief biography of Becke's life and an outline of the stories. Updated 4 August 04

We reckoned that we should be at the Pole on December 14. On the afternoon of that day we had brilliant weathera light wind from the south-east with a temperature of -10[degree] F. The sledges were going very well. The day passed without any occurrence worth mentioning, and at three o'clock in the afternoon we halted, as according to our reckoning we had reached our goal. About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Micronesia (Marshall Islands) Culture Marshallese society has always been stratified, and despite increasing Westernization and the introduction of a moneyed economy, social status still comes as much from one's kinship as it does from one's own achievements. Chiefs continue to wield a great deal of authority over land ownership and usage. Food cultivation on the islands has always been catch as catch can. Fish and seafood provide the bulk of the nonvegetable dishes, with tuna a staple of the catch. On land, breadfruit, coconut, arrowroot, yams, taro and pumpkins are the traditional mealtime mainstays. With the increasing Westernization of the Pacific, North American junk food has been increasingly dominating more traditional staples; on the rise too are the related health problems of obesity, diabetes, high blood-pressure and alcoholism. In travels between the islands, early inhabitants learned to read the patterns of the waves and the positions of the stars, and they made stick charts to record and pass on their observations to less experienced navigators. By tying flat strips of wood together in imitation of the wave patterns and attaching cowry shells to the sticks to represent particular islands and atolls, the experienced navigator could memorize the patterns for when he was out at sea - the charts were not actually taken on the journeys. Although few modern Marshallese know how to read the charts, many still make them for their popularity as souvenirs.
