biography
Born in Lawrence, Kansas, in February 1909, actor Hugh Beaumont rose through the ranks before entering films in 1940. Beaumont's first ambition was to be a minister, but he left it behind, at least temporarily, and began doing stage and radio work. Beaumont later earned a Master's degree in Theology from USC. His first film appearance came in the MGM short Jack Pot (1940; with Tom Neal ), which was a part of the studio's Crime Doesn't Pay series of shorts. However, Beaumont's career was stagnating in a series of bit parts until the mid 1940s, when he took over the role of Michael Shayne from Lloyd Nolan in PRC's detective series of films. When the series was resurrected for television in 1960, Richard Denning played the fictional private detective.
Beaumont continued in a flourish of noir releases at PRC, but when the studio was absorbed by Eagle-Lion in 1948, Beaumont's film career sagged. But he kept working in the then-new medium of television, in educational and indsutrial films (as an actor and narrator), and in theatrically released films such as The Mole People (1956; with

BROUSSARD, JOSEPH ELOI Less than 1,500 acres was planted with rice in Texas in 1892. To foster rice production, in 1898 Broussard cofounded the Beaumont Irrigation Company, whose initial canal led to the formation of the Lower Neches Valley Authority. qv The system is now capable of irrigating 50,000 acres of rice while supplying the area's industrial requirements for water. At the time of Broussard's death, acres planted with rice in Texas annually reached well over 400,000, and production had spread to twenty-three counties. Through family landholdings and the advancement of credit to farmers, the mill, under Broussard's management, farmed some 10,000 acres of rice in peak years. On this acreage rice growing was rotated with cattle raising, a lifelong interest of Broussard. From 1907 to 1918 Broussard was president of the Rice Millers' and Dealers' Association, forerunner of the present Rice Millers' Association of America. In 1909, when the industry faced a financial crisis, Broussard was a member of a two-man team that successfully marketed American rice in Europe. In 1950 the International Rice Festival at Crowley, Louisiana, was dedicated to him. As an exemplary Catholic, Broussard was knighted in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. On October 6, 1956, he died. He was survived by his wife and nine children. Two new varieties of rice, developed at the China, Texas, Rice-Pasture Experiment Station and planted worldwide, were named Bella Patna and LaBelle in honor of the rice pioneer's widow and in recognition of his continuous support of the station's research programs.

GANNON, CATHERINE (1864-1921). Catherine (Mother Mary Pauline) Gannon, the second mother general of the Dominican Sisters qv of Texas, the first of two children of Bartholomew Gannon and the fifth of six children of Margaret Welsh (Eagan) Gannon, was born at Newark, New Jersey, on November 7, 1864. She was reared in a home of strong Catholic faith and was educated in the public schools and by the Sisters of Charity of Convent Station, New Jersey, at St. Joseph School. Catherine taught at St. Joseph after completing her studies, participated in church functions, and attended the sick in the neighborhood. A Dominican priest, Rev. J. P. Devereaux, directed her to the newly arrived sisters in Texas at Galveston. On February 2, 1886, she received the habit of the order and two years later made her first profession of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. On the death of Mother Mary Agnes Magevney qv in 1891, Sister Pauline was appointed mother general of the small community. She was reluctant to accept the office because she was a novice, but under her leadership the order accomplished much. At the time there was only one convent and academy in Galveston, Sacred Heart, staffed by the sisters. Beginning in 1893, the sisters took over the cathedral school of Galveston, St. Anthony in Beaumont, St. Mary in Taylor, and Sacred Heart in Houston, all before 1900. As a result of the Galveston hurricane of 1900, qv BIBLIOGRAPHY: Sister M. Borromeo, O.P.

RESEARCH INTERESTS I am a NERC Advanced Fellow in the School of Animal and Microbial Sciences University of Reading . I am interested in using gene frequency information to infer the demographic history of populations. I have developed a number of statistical methods to estimate changes in effective population size and patterns of gene-flow and admixture, and also to identify discrepant loci, possibly under selection.
