    Écrivain français Né à Angers, le 26 décembre 1853. Plusieurs fois lauréat de l'Académie, professeur de droit à la Faculté libre d'Angers, il a publié des romans, des livres de voyages, et collaboré à la Revue des Deux Mondes et à divers journaux.
    Il a été élu à l'Académie, après le succès de son livre Les Oberlé, le 18 juin 1903, en remplacement d'Ernest Legouvé, au troisième tour de scrutin par 21 voix contre 8 à Larroumet et 7 à Émile Gebhart. Il a été reçu le 28 avril 1904 par Ferdinand Brunetière.
