Full name: Lyman Frank Baum . American publisher, playwright and author born in Chittenango, New York. A dabbler in various fields who found his voice as a writer of children's books. His description of Dorothy's Kansas in the Oz books stems from a period spent in Aberdeen, South Dakota. His other works are usually in a vein similar to the Oz books.
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
A successful attempt to create a particularly American fairy tail, though its impact was vitiated by too many sequels. Edgier and more complex than the classic 1939 movie based on it. Followed by sequels, The Marvelous Land of Oz Ozma of Oz Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz The Road to Oz The Emerald City of Oz The Patchwork Girl of Oz Tik-Tok of Oz The Scarecrow of Oz Rinkitink in Oz The Lost Princess of Oz The Tin Woodman of Oz The Magic of Oz Glinda of Oz (1920), and dozens of later continuations by other hands.

Edgar Rice Burroughs met former Chicago writer L. Frank Baum in Hollywood, in 1916. The two became fast friends from the start. Baum took the younger Burroughs under his wing and even invited him to join the prestigious men's club, the Uplifters . After studying the biographies of the two men (see ERB Life Line Bio ), it comes as no surprise that the two got along so well there are many striking similarities in their backgrounds.
LYMAN FRANK BAUM
"When I was young I longed to write a great novel that should win me fame. Now that I am getting old my first book is written to amuse children. For, aside from my evident inability to do anything "great," I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-wisp which, when caught, is not worth the possession; but to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward..." Baum, L. Frank
Lyman Frank Baum was born on 15 May in Chittennango, NY (near Syracuse). His father is a barrel maker, who subsequently goes into the oil business and becomes wealthy.
As a young boy and then teenager he starts up several newspapers and a magazine. In his late teens he becomes interested in the theater, and his father gives him a number of theaters and operas in New York and Pennsylvania to manage.
Writes and publishes a successful musical play, "The Maid of Arran".
Marries Maud Gage. Her mother is a leading figure in the Women's Rights Movement of the time, and a close associate of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.
Baum's father dies and the family fortunes wane. A number of Maud's family have moved to the Dakota Territory, so Frank, Maud, and children join them in Aberdeen (South Dakota). For several years he operates a store, "Baum's Bazaar." It falls victim to hard times in 1890, so he turns to running the local weekly newspaper, "The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer."1891
When the newspaper fails, Frank and family move to Chicago where he takes a job as a reporter for the "Evening Post." To make ends meet he also works as a traveling salesman for a china company. He develops characters and situation outlines while on these trips to help him with story telling to his children when back at home.

The Wizard of Oz L. Frank Baum The Wizard of Oz is a great book for all ages. It's a mix of comedy, fright, and happiness all in one book. Dorothy and her dog, Toto, get lost after the tornado. They encounter strange things like witches and munchkins. Then, they come upon a strange man called Oz. Believe it or not, the town of Oz is colored green!!! I can't tell you anymore or I'll spoil the book. You wouldn't want us to spoil it, would you? Artifact Courtesy of SIU-C Museum

American journalist and writer, whose best-known book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Baum's stories about the imaginary Land of Oz belong to the classics of fantasy literature. The Oz series was long shunned by librarians, and neglected by scholars of children's literature. Baum has often been compared to Lewis Carroll - they both had a girl as a protagonist in their most famous works. "Yet the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as 'historical' in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer 'wonder tales' in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf, and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curling incident devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident."
(Baum in the introduction to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)

"Frank L. Richards" and Oz
In a 1992 interview , Andy Partridge admitted that this name was a mistake: "I had a brain road accident when writing the lyrics. There's a line that says, `Dream you're Frank L. Richards and this is the great land of Oz.' I realised after I'd finished that I'd mixed up Frank Richards, the author of the Billy Bunter books in England, with L. Frank Baum, who wrote the Oz books. But that makes it all the more interesting, doesn't it?" So here's information on what he really (sort of) meant ...
Frank Richards
'Frank Richards' was the most familiar of the many pseudonyms employed by English author Charles Hamilton (1876-1961). For 50 years, Hamilton churned out an astounding volume of stories for boys some 7,000 stories of varying lengths, with a tally of 72 million words. At his peak, he was writing the equivalent of an average-length novel each week (about 70,000 words). ... like most Amalgamated Press 'hacks' he filled his pages largely by means of short paragraphs and a good deal of repetition. As E.S. Turner has pointed out in Boys Will Be Boys , 'a sub-editor surgically disposed could have cut out every other sentence without impairing continuity.' Yet the repetition was the essence of the style, and had an almost hypnotic effect on devotees. Hamilton's plots were usually crafted skilfully.

by L. Frank Baum Size: 107 KB Download Now When Frank Baum wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , he didn't intend for the book to be the initial volume of a series. He had only thought of it as a book about a girl who is swept away to a magical land by a tornado. But, after the book appeared, a children's play based upon the character of the Scarecrow toured the United States, attracting thousands of new fans for the book. Then the fans of the book began to write to Mr. Baum, requesting that he write another book about the magical land of Oz. In 1904, the author honored those requests with the second volume of a series that would eventually include fourteen novels and one book of short stories. (All of these books plus two
