Lyman Frank Baum - (1856-1919) Chittenango Biography Lyman Frank Baum was born May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, NY. Beginning at the age of 10, he started a number of newspapers and a magazine. As a teen, Baum managed several theaters in New York and Pennsylvania, that were given to him by his father. He also wrote and published a successful musical, The Maid of Arran In 1882, Baum married Maud Gage. In 1887, Baum's father died, and he, along with his wife and children moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota. In Aberdeen, Baum opened a store, "Baum's Bazaar", which lasted only a short time. When the store failed, Baum began running a local paper, The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer . Baum again was met with failure, and he moved with his family to Chicago, IL. There he became a reporter for the Evening Post In 1897, Baum published his first children's book, Mother Goose in Prose with illustrator Maxfield Parrish. In 1899, with illustrator William Wallace Denslow, Baum published Father Goose, His Book

A sickly child, he read fairy tales constantly. "To please a child ," he once said, "is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward." Inspired by the writing of Charles Dickens , Baum was a natural storyteller. His oral tales would draw neighborhood children to his house before bedtime to hear his latest imaginary installment. He would weave tales of imagination from everyday objectspumpkins, scarecrows, dogs... Urged by his mother-in-law to write his tales down, he sold his first book in 1897, Mother Goose in Prose . In 20 years he wrote over 70 books and is best known for his famous novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz "Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child needs only entertainment," he wrote in the book's introduction. The book gave birth to a series of novels and the unforgettable 1939 MGM film classic. Through his memorable and beloved Oz characters, Dorothy Gale, her dog, Toto, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow, Baum wrote about

They represent one of the earliest uses of pictures in instructional books for students, starting in the sixteenth century with the hornbooks or wooden paddles with inscribed alphabets, numerals, and prayers. Out of this tradition came the battledore, a folded piece of cardboard with an illustrated alphabet. By the time L. Frank Baum published this alphabet book, printing technology had developed to the point at which children expected their books to be in bold and irresistible color. Baum's career as a children's author began when his family encouraged him to compile the nursery rhymes he told his sons. His first book, Mother Goose in Prose , sold well, and he followed with Father Goose: His Book , which became the best-selling children's title of 1899. In 1900 he had two books published.

L. Frank Baum's first attempts at finding a publisher for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) were fruitless: The market for British fairy tales was considerably stronger at the time, and the fantasy land he had created with its roots in the American Midwest was a hard sell. This rejection occurred even after Baum and his illustrator, W.W. Denslow, had produced the best-selling children's book of 1899, a collection of humorous verse entitled Father Goose, His Book. Eventually Baum did find a publisher, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was an immediate success, spawning a stage play in 1902, 13 sequels between 1900 and his death in 1919, a series of Sunday comic pages, a young readers' series of Oz books and, of course, the classic film of 1939. Success of this magnitude was without precedent in Baum's life: During his adult life, he had relocated from New York to South Dakota to Chicago, working in and starting a number of businesses, each of which fizzled. But with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz he hit upon a winning formula: A child hero leaves home through some accident and finds herself in a fantasy land, where she is guided by a wise parent-surrogate. This formula is not wholly dissimilar from that of the adventure story for boys that was so popular at the turn of the century, so it is perhaps not surprising that in addition to the Oz industry Baum fathered, he also wrote more than 30 adventure stories between 1906 and 1919. Under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne, Baum wrote the

General Information:
L. Frank Baum wrote in 1900, what now is considered an American classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz . It is the first book in a long series about the country of Oz. There are 40 official books in the series (according to the Oz community). In fact, since the Oz characters went to public domain in 1956, there have been many books published with the Oz characters. The 40 are considered official because they are widely distributed and are published by Reilly and Lee. Baum wrote the first 14 books in the series. The last Oz book Baum published was in 1920. Ruth Plumly Thompson was the next official author in the series. She followed Baum with authoring the next 19 Oz books (1921-1939). John C. Neil, Jack Snow, Rachel R. Cosgrove, Eloise Jarvis McGraw and Lauren McGraw Wagner authored the rest of the Oz series. The last book was published in 1963.
The Oz series has inspired plays, musicals, and movies [ Wizard of Oz (1939) and Return to Oz (1985)]. Baum's intent for the Oz books were to entertain children. However, there are many adult fans of the Oz books.

Brothers Judd Top 100 of the 20th Century: Novels (27)
Author Info: L. Frank Baum
For some reason, this terrific book is largely unread. Perhaps because we are all so familiar
with the movie, people just don't seem to read the book. That's too bad, because it's great. Baum has created a uniquely American fairy tale. It teaches
several wonderful lessons: the Wizard can't help you, but you can help yourself and there's no
place like home. What more could you ask from a book for kids, or adults?

L. Frank Baum The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Chicago, George M. Hill, 1900 Baum inscribed this copy of the first Oz book "To my dear Sister Mary Louise Brewster with my best love, L. Frank Baum, Chicago, June 20, 1900." Although the book was not published until September, this is one of the advance copies which Baum circulated to his relatives and closest friends before it was placed on sale. Illustrated by W. W. Denslow, the most famous in the Oz series tells the story of Dorothy and her dog Toto, blown away in a tornado from Kansas to the mythical country of Oz. The popularity of the work led to thirteen sequels, a dramatization in 1902 and an extraordinarily popular motion picture in 1938. Gift of Solton and Julia Engel Collections and Treasures
