About This Site / Search
Alphabetical Listing by Name Listing by Country Listing by Discipline Each name in the following list of naturalists is linked to a corresponding capsule "chrono-biographical" sketch of that individual prepared by the authors. Coverage extends backward in time as far as the eighteenth century; figures from all over the world are included (though there is admittedly a decided Anglo-American bias). The target subject here is biogeography, but this being a broad field there are many persons on the list who are better known as climatologists, zoologists, botanists, ecologists, oceanographers, paleontologists, etc.in other words, who made their main reputations in cognate disciplines. This service has been set up to support my two "Early Classics in Biogeography, Distribution and Diversity Studies"

IAN WILMUT 1944-
CLONING A Finn Dorset sheep named after Dolly Parton made headlines in 1996 when she became the first mammal to be cloned with DNA taken from an adult cell. The feat, by Scottish embryologist Ian Wilmut, proved that is possible to produce offspring of mammals that are genetically identical to living adults. In his Edinburgh lab, Wilmut has taken the storm in stride. "I don't have any sleepless nights," he says. "I believe we are a moral species."
MELVIN CALVIN 1911-1997
PHOTOSYNTHESIS On the day the Japanese surrendered in 1945, Melvin Calvin set out to solve the riddle of photosynthesis. With an interdisciplinary team of chemists, biologists and physicists at UC Berkeley, Calvin methodically traced the paths that carbon-14 travels through a plant during photosynthesis. Developing technology as he went, Calvin tracked carbon-14 from its absorption as carbon dioxide to its conversion into carbohydrates and other organic compounds. This sequence of reactions is called the Calvin Cycle, and its discovery won for its founder the Nobel Prize in 1961.

Journeys Over Land and Sea: Botany and Zoology
Direct observation of specimens brought to Europe from foreign lands replaced earlier depictions of the natural world with more accurate, less fanciful descriptions. Explorers in the Americas contributed new data about those continents.
[Gart der Gesundheit] (The garden of health)
Ulm?: Konrad Dinckmut?, 1487?.
Gart der Gesundheit is one of the first printed herbals to be published in a vernacular language instead of Latin. Herbals combined folklore and home remedies, information from classical sources, and religious symbolism into a popular mix of botanical and medical advice. Because text and woodcut images were often copied from earlier works, rather than drawn from nature, herbals became increasingly imprecise over time. While some illustrations remain identifiable, even charming to the modern eye, others are unrecognizable, frustrating both contemporaries and modern researchers.

Chapter III of: The Naturalist on the River Amazons, A Record of Adventures, Habits of Animals, Sketches of Brazilian and Indian Life, and Aspects of Nature Under the Equator, During Eleven Years of Travel
    Henry Walter Bates
I Before leaving the subject of Para, where I resided, as already stated, in all eighteen months, it will be necessary to give a more detailed account of several matters connected with the customs of the people and the Natural History of the neighbourhood, which have hitherto been only briefly mentioned. I reserve an account of the trade and improved condition of Para in 1859 for the end of this narrative. During the first few weeks of our stay, many of those religious festivals took place, which occupied so large a share of the time and thoughts of the people. These were splendid affairs, wherein artistically-arranged processions through the streets, accompanied by thousands of people, military displays, the clatter of fireworks, and the clang of military music, were superadded to pompous religious services in the churches. To those who had witnessed similar ceremonies in the Southern countries of Europe, there would be nothing remarkable perhaps in these doings, except their taking place amidst the splendours of tropical nature; but to me they were full of novelty, and were besides interesting as exhibiting much that was peculiar in the manners of the people.
I will now add a few more notes which I have accumulated on the subject of the natural history, and then we shall have done, for the present, with Para and its neighbourhood.

Yellow Angled-Sulphur (Anteos maerula Fabricius, 1775)
Fabricius was a Danish pupil of the famous Swedish naturalist Linnaeus (1707-1778) and their work provides a direct link between the earlier observers and the later systematists as the describers of life on earth, or biodiversity as we now call it. [Hunter Colln. D/4; Syst.Ent. 479/157]
The extraordinary combination of two men from Leicester, England, who made their mark in increasing knowledge of the natural world come together in this one specimen. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) worked principally in the Oriental region, having originally explored the Amazon in the company of Bates but his collection was lost in a fire onboard ship on the way back to Britain. He independently elaborated ideas evolution by natural selection and so Darwin and he published jointly the scientific paper that announced it to the world.
Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) spent his time as an explorer in South America and came back to describe insects collected by himself and others, including this species from his old friend Wallace.
