Bates was born in Leicester . He went to the Amazon after meeting Alfred Russel Wallace by accident in the Leicester Public Library, while Wallace was teaching in the Collegiate School . In 1847, they decided together that an empirical approach, a collecting trip "towards solving the problem of origin of species" would reap scientific dividends.

His fame rests principally on his zoological work, especially his insect collection, and his discovery of the principle of mimicry. Henry Bates was born in Leicester, the son of a manufacturer who intended him for a business career and apprenticed him to a hosiery maker. Bates had little formal education, but the Mechanics Institute in Leicester had a good library and offered evening courses. By attending the courses and reading, Bates learned Greek, Latin, French, draftsmanship, and composition. His growing interest in Zoology led him to spend his holidays roaming the countryside and collecting specimens. (1.5 pages / 442 words in this biography)

Bates, Henry Walter
English naturalist and explorer, who spent 11 years collecting animals and plants in South America and identified 8,000 new species of insects. He made a special study of camouflage in animals, and his observation of insect imitation of species that are unpleasant to predators is known as 'Batesian mimicry'.
Bates was born in Leicester and left school at 13, but studied natural history in his spare time. In 1844 he met English naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace , and together they travelled to the Amazon region of South America 1848 to study and collect its flora and fauna. Wallace returned to England 1852 but Bates remained until 1859. He returned with a vast number of specimens, including more than 14,000 species of insects.
In 1861 Bates presented a paper entitled 'Contributions to an insect fauna of the Amazon Valley', in which he outlined his observations of mimicry. He had discovered that several different species of butterflies have almost identical patterns of colours on their wings, and that some are distasteful to bird predators whereas others are not. He suggested that the latter types, influenced by natural selection, mimic the distasteful species and thus increase their chances of survival.
In The Naturalist on the River Amazon 1863, Bates described both his explorations and his scientific findings.

    Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892)
The Englishman Henry W. Bates, fascinated by entomology since childhood. He already a diehard beetle collector, became friends with Wallace while they were both living in the English countryside and then set out with him to become a professional collector in the Amazon in 1848. When Wallace returned to England and then went on to Indonesia, Bates stayed in the Amazon but continued to correspond, encouraging Wallace's developing theories on organic evolution. He stayed for 11 years, collecting butterflies and other insects in the Amazon rain forest. Despite ill health and unimaginable difficulties, he collected specimens of more than 10,000 animal species, 8,000 of which were new to Western science. Bates discovered that closely related species often were separated geographically by rivers, and later realized that this was evidence of geographical speciation.
His 1862 study of color patterns in butterflies established what is now called Batesian mimicry, in which non-poisonous animals mimic the bright warning colors of poisonous animals. Bates argued that this kind of mimicry could not be produced by Lamarckian use-inheritance and was clear evidence of selection. Elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1881.

    * Field work in the Amazon, 1848-1862
