James Matthew Barrie 1860 - 1937
Early Life
Thrums is Born
At Kirriemuir he still had to persuade his family he would earn his living as a writer. He saw a job advertised by the "Nottingham Journal" for someone to write leading articles. James sent away a University essay and got the job. Later, when the owners had to economise, he was out of work and came home. Listening once more to his mother’s tales, he thought he could turn them into an article. Kirriemuir was to be called "Thrums". The piece was sent to a London newspaper. Back came the reply, "I like that Scotch thing. Any more of those?"
Success as a Writer
In 1885, he moved to London, again with Alexander’s help. He worked hard on a wide range of articles for newspapers. This brought him regular money at last - £20 a month! He had "Auld Licht Idylls" published in 1888 and people liked the humour in it. Many successful novels followed and James was thrilled when Robert Louis Stevenson wrote to him from Samoa.
The Origins of Peter Pan
J M Barrie married an actress in 1894, and when they were on honeymoon in Switzerland they bought a St Bernard puppy. This dog was to become an important part of a future play.

The Writers J M Barrie Biography James Matthew Barrie was born at Kirriemuir in Forfarshire, the seventh child to David Barrie, a hand-loom weaver, and Margaret Ogilvie, the daughter of a stone-mason. Surviving on the income provided by declining weaving industry, the Barries were never wealthy and it is from his early childhood experiences as a dweller in the tenements that Barrie drew his sympathetic portraits of the rural poor. The death of Barrie’s elder brother David, when Barrie was just six years old, was to have a marked effect of his life and work. His mother never recovered from the loss of her son, whom Barrie perceived to be the favourite and whose place in his mother’s affections he strove to replace. The psychological significance of Barrie’s relationship with his mother and his need for maternal approval are apparent in the uncritical, almost doting biography of her life which he published in 1896. The exploration of feminine identity was to become a marked feature of Barrie’s writing. The experience of death in childhood would also influence Barrie’s work, which is constantly pre-occupied with the themes of exile, immortality and the otherworldly. Barrie’s was an itinerant youth. In 1868 he went to study for three years at Glasgow Academy before returning to Forfarshire where he attended the local school. Then, from 1873 he spent his teenage years at Dumfries Academy before moving to Edinburgh to attend University at the age of 22. Barrie was unmoved by his University experience and he derived his intellectual inspiration largely from the theatre. Upon graduating he was already writing theatrical reviews, a career which eventually led him to London in 1885 where he would produce his first plays.

JM Barrie 1860 - 1937 Return to..... Quality Street The Admirable Crichton Sir James Matthew Barrie is the author of Peter Pan , the timeless children's fantasy that has been adapted for film, television and stage, and practically become legend in its own right. He began his career as a novelist and journalist, but the majority of his work was as a playwright. More about JM Barrie
An imaginative and prolific writer, Barrie's other works are all too easily overlooked because of his astonishing success with the stories of Peter Pan. His explorations of magical worlds and human emotion were particularly intense, and crucially, they appealed greatly to a large number of people. Peter Pan was, however, largely autobiographical, since Barrie himself never really wanted to grow up. Peter Pan first appeared as a stage play, at the Duke of York, London, in 1906, before it was published as a book in 1907. Some of his works are listed below:
The Little Minister
Sentimental Tommy
Tommy and Grizel
Quality Street
(stage play) (1901)
The Little White Bird

Quotes of the Day for 9 May 2004 - J. M. Barrie
Where to? "First star to the right and straight on till morning!" That was Peter Pan, standing on the hands of Big Ben with Wendy and her brother. The man who wrote it, Sir James Matthew Barrie, was born at Kirriemuir, Scotland on this day in 1860. When I look through his quotes I find myself charmed. Dreams do come true, if we only wish hard enough, You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it. I'm not young enough to know everything. It is not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do that is the secret of happiness. The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another. You must have been warned against letting the golden hours slip by. Yes, but some of them are golden only because we let them slip by. We are all failures - at least, the best of us are.

http://www.textosentido.org/textosentido/biografias/barrie.html
