Introduction:
J. M. Barrie was the author of 'Peter Pan' . This classic of world literature grew from the stories he told for the five sons of Arthur and Sylvia Llewelwyn Davies. After a strict upbringing in the Scottish village of Kirriemuir, Barrie attended Edinburgh University and then worked as a journalist in Nottingham. A piece extolling the delights of "Pretty Boys" was rewarded with the sack, and he moved to London as a freelance writer. His fierce work-ethic - probably born of trying to sublimate his paedophilia - and prodigious output carried him to the top of his profession within three years. Barrie began "worshipping from afar" young actresses of the 1890s London stage, despite his being scarcely 5' tall and with a legendary shyness and reserve broken only in the presence of children. In 1894, "on his deathbed" while dangerously ill with pleurisy and pneumonia, he married actress Mary Ansell. It is uncertain if she married him out of pity or not. But he recovered and during the convalescent honeymoon it became apparent that Barrie had little real interest in women. The childless marriage was a sham and his wife increasingly bitter. Barrie "went back to the silence of his study" and began his first great novel of boyhood

Figure 1.George is pictured here with his mother Slyvia in 1900. He wears his beret very rakishly. Did mother fix it like that? Note the collar which we now call a Peter Pan collar that he wears with his smock. As in this photograph, the boys sometimes wore belts outside their smocks. Barrie took the photograph. Perhaps the most beloved literary characters of all time is Peter Pan. The story was written by J.M. Barie and first presented on stage in 1904. Published versions of the book delighted children and movie versions, especially the Disney version, brougt Peter into the lives of children all over the world. Barie developed the story in the process of telling stories to the children of a family he met in Kensington Gardens, the Llewellyn-Davies boys. Peter is in fact named after one of the boys, Peter. The ways the boys were dressed provide a glimpse of how some affluent English boys were dressed at the turn of the century. Both parents died when the boys were still quite young. The story of the boys as adults is also very sad.

Scottish journalist, playwright, and children's book writer. Barrie became world famous with his play and story about PETER PAN (1904), the boy who lived in Never Land, had a war with Captain Hook, and would not grow up. The first name of Peter Pan was almost certainly taken from Peter Llewellyn Davies (1897-1960), one of the several Davies brothers that Barrie knew. "When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies."
(from Peter Pan) J.M. Barrie was born in the Lowland village of Kirriemuir, in Forfashire. His father, David Barrie was a handloom weaver, and mother, Margaret Ogilvy, the daughter of a stonemason. They had ten children, Barrie was the ninth. His brother David died in a skating accident. David was the mother's favorite child, and Barrie tried to gain her affection by dressing up in the dead boy's clothes. The obsessive relationship that grew between mother and son was to mark the whole of his life. Barrie published an adoring biography of her in 1896.

I imagine the first question anyone will ask is what is a column called "Scottish Flotsam". I guess we will have to begin with what is "flotsam". Among the definitions of the word are "things washed ashore" or "miscellaneous trifles". Well, we believe you can find some great treasure on the ocean shore. But you will never know what you will find or its value. So we decided that is what this column is - flotsam. We wanted a place to put things that didn't fit anywhere else and might be of interest. Each item could be a column itself and might be some day but for now it will be the flotsam, which washes our way. Lets begin with a famous Scot. Sir J M Barrie (1860-1937) Born in Kirriemuir on 9 May 1860 in the house pictured here, James Mathew Barrie was the 9th child of a weaver. Even as a child, he wrote for the school magazine and drama group (in which he also acted). He took a Master of Arts degree at Edinburgh University and after a short spell with the Nottingham Journal he moved to London in 1885. Barrie wrote for a number of papers and published his first book in 1887 and subsequent stories established his reputation and popularity. "Auld Licht Idylls" was a series of racy sketches of humble life in Kirriemuir (renamed 'Thrums' in the book, after the word in weaving for the ends of the warp threads). These stories began what was to become known, somewhat disparagingly, as the "Kailyard School" of Scottish fiction. A number of novels followed including "The Little Minister" and "Margaret Ogilvy", the latter a tender tribute to his mother.

J. M. BARRIE

The Eternal Peter Pan , written by James Barrie and illustrated by Susan Hudson, is one of a trilogy of books issued in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of Barrie's death. Peter Pan, the Complete Book and Peter Pan, the Complete Play are to be issued in January 1988. The Eternal Peter Pan is a beautiful hard-cover forty-eight-page book with twenty-one full-colour etchings, each illustrating a significant quotation from Peter Pan printed on the opposite page. The quotations selected emphasize the philosphical aspect of Barrie's attitudes on sex, death, and the afterlife, aspects of Barrie often unknown to the general reader. The pictures will appeal to the sophisticated viewer, who will appreciate the subtlety of faces emerging from maps or greenery or painted in green and orange tones. These unusual techniques in the etchings are done with skill and good taste. In the frontispiece illustration, a winged Peter surrounded by waves, fish and an eel is looking bravely forward and saying, "To die will be an awfully big adventure." Those who like to look at beautiful books and their illustrations will enjoy the novelty, skill and sensitivity of this one. Artists will admire the unusual techniques, while those of a philosophical turn will appreciate the insights in the passages selected for quotation. Children and those who are quite unfamiliar with Peter Pan and his world will find it difficult to relate to these etchings, but senior art students will enjoy and want to emulate them. Librarians, especially those concerned with older teenagers and adults, will want to purchase this intriguing book.
