At the forefront of the Edwardian cult of childhood was Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie's play about a boy who would not grow up. Between 1904 and 1915, Peter Pan played on the London stage to sold-out crowds every Christmas. Peter Pan also ushered in a greater commercialization of children's literature. Peter Pan in Kensington Garden, published in 1906 and illustrated by Arthur Rackham, was the Christmas gift of choice for children swept up in the Neverland of the fairy story. After Peter Pan, the book industry began to produce not only more elaborate editions of children's books, like Rackham's, but also better and cheaper editions. The Edwardians' idealized children also became an ideal market. Barrie, who was made a baronet in 1913, knew the London literary market well. Born in the provincial Scottish town of Kirriemuir, Barrie went to London to embark on a journalism career. For the St. James Gazette he wrote a series of columns about his native town, which in the Gazette he called "Thrums." In 1888, Barrie published Auld Licht Idylls

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Barrie, Sir James Matthew (1860-1937), Scottish dramatist and novelist, whose works, both theatrical and nontheatrical, stress his personal ironic view of life as a romantic adventure. Sir James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir and educated at the University of Edinburgh. In 1885 he settled in London and wrote for the St. James's Gazette and many other periodicals. His volumes Auld Licht Idylls (1888) and A Window in Thrums (1889) contained sketches of Scottish village life. The Little Minister (1891), a romantic novel of love and adventure, was followed by

J.M. Barrie Every child and every adult who is still a child at heart knows the story of Peter Pan, but fewer know that the creator of that timeless (and ageless) story was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and that the inspiration for many of his stories came from his Scottish home. Barrie was educated in Kirriemuir and Forfar, and later at Edinburgh University, where he studied English and graduated in 1882. He worked for the Nottingham Journal and later the St. James’s Gazette of London before devoting himself completely to his literary career. His early works, published between 1888 and 1900, are characteristically Scottish in dialect, humor and sensitivity. After 1900, Barrie devoted himself to children’s books; The Little White Bird, which introduced the Peter Pan character, was published in 1902. Although the Peter Pan books (there are three in all) represent Barrie’s best-known work, he was also a successful playwright. The author described his work as a means “to play hide and seek with angles.” Barrie shared his interest in fairies with his friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who will be featured later on in this month’s series on Scottish writers.

J.M. Barrie
James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), the playwright who wrote Peter Pan, was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. When he was six years old, his older brother, David,a young teenager, died in a skating accident. Their mother was devastated by this loss. James believed that David had been his mother's favorite. Perhaps as an attempt to console her, he tried to replace his dead brother and become like him, even wearing his clothes. In later writings, Barrie notes that, to his mother, the boy David remained a boy of thirteen forever. Later, this idea would blossom into the inspiration for Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. Educated at Edinburgh University, Barrie moved to England to work as a journalist, and lived in London for the rest of his life. He was successful as a playwright, and numbered among his friends Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes) and George Bernard Shaw. He married, but the marriage ended in divorce and he had no children of his own. However, when his friends, Arthur and Sylvia Llewellyn Davies, died, he became the legal guardian of their five sons. The boys' names were Peter, John, Michael, Nicholas, and Arthur. Their escapades probably inspired the events in Neverland.

About the author
James Matthew Barrie was born in the Lowland village of Kirriemuir, in Forfashire, Scotland. His father, David Barrie was a handloom weaver, and mother, Margaret Ogilvy, the daughter of a stonemason. They had ten children, Barrie was the ninth.
Barrie studied at Dumfries Academy at the University of Edinburgh, receiving his M.A. in 1882. He worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal and moved to London as a freelance writer in 1885. Barrie knew such great figures of literature as G.B. Shaw and H.G. Wells and could surprise them with his remarks. Once he said to Wells: "It is all very well to be able to write books, but can you waggle your ears?" When a friend noticed that he ordered Brussels sprouts every day, he explained: "I cannot resists ordering them. The words are so lovely to say."
In 1888 Barrie gained his first fame with Auld Licht Idylls , sketches of Scottish life. His melodramatic novel, The Little Minister (1891), became a huge success, and was filmed later three times. After its dramatization Barrie wrote mostly for the theatre. In 1884 he married Mary Ansell, who had appeared in his play

". . . so I went, laden with charges from my mother to walk in the middle of the street (they jump out on you as you are turning a corner), never to venture forth after sunset, and always to lock up everything (I who could never lock up anything, except my heart in company)." So states James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), describing his first venture into London in 1885. This confession provides a clue to the writer's character - at once a revealing author, and a man who maintained an emotional distance from his admiring readers. The life and work of James Matthew Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, will be highlighted in an exhibition at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in early 2005. On view will be original manuscripts, photographs, documents detailing the influence of the young Llewelyn Davies brothers on the creation of Peter Pan, and artifacts, including Barrie's key to Kensington Gardens. The exhibition will open to the public on Thursday, February 3, 2005 and run through April 23, 2005. The exhibition celebrates the creative life of Barrie and allows visitors to learn about the breadth of his work, while showing off the undeniable charm of Peter Pan. A film series, featuring works based on Barrie plays will be shown on Sunday afternoons in February at the Center for British Art on the Yale campus.

Dionysus and Peter Pan
Dionysiaca Creators can be quite conscious and explicit about the relationship between flight and their creative endeavours. Barrie saw his creative spirit in Icarian terms. His `other half', which he called M'connachie, was 'the fanciful one', a bird-like being free to defy, time, space, gravity and death without fear. Both authors illustrate the workings of the child's id or infantile unconscious, Nonnus by a free-floating stream of exuberant fantasy, and Barrie by a symbolic Neverland inhabited by archetypal figures that reflects a struggle to come to terms with adulthood. Both Nonnus and Barrie were concerned with the theatre. Barrie was most famous as a playwright, Nonnus dealt with the god of the theatre, and events which are theatrical (expressed through mime, dance, loud noises, masks, disguises or the exotically amazing) and which explore the boundaries of reality and illusion (a major theme of Barrie's plays, too). Of both authors it could be said that their works reflect `the bubbling turmoil of (their) own half-formulated wishes and ambitions'.
