- Sir J M Barrie (1860-1937)
Born in Kirriemuir on 9 May 1860 in the house pictured here, James Mathew Barrie was the 9th child of a weaver. Even as a child, he wrote for the school magazine and drama group (in which he also acted). He took a Master of Arts degree at Edinburgh University and after a short spell with the Nottingham Journal he moved to London in 1885. Barrie wrote for a number of papers and published his first book in 1887 and subsequent stories established his reputation and popularity. "Auld Licht Idylls" was a series of racy sketches of humble life in Kirriemuir (renamed 'Thrums' in the book, after the word in weaving for the ends of the warp threads). These stories began what was to become known, somewhat disparagingly, as the "Kailyard School" of Scottish fiction. A number of novels followed including "The Little Minister" and "Margaret Ogilvy" , the latter a tender tribute to his mother. But Barrie was now turning more to writing plays and even an opera (in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, no less). In 1897 a stage version of "The Little Minister" was a great popular success and he went on to create many of his well known works such as "The Admirable Crichton" in 1902. A story "The Little White Bird" published in 1902 had ideas which Barrie carried forward to his best known work "Peter Pan". This was first performed in 1904 and was followed by

Barrie attended Glasgow Academy, Forfar Academy and Dumfries Academy. In 1887he enrolled in Edinburgh University, where he graduated in four years with a master's degree. He worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal before moving to London in 1885 to freelance. When Barrie was six years old his older brother David died. Barrie set himself to console his mother, and later attributed this as his start down the road to becoming an author. In 1894 he married the actress Mary Ansell. The marriage was childless and ended in divorce in 1909. However, he was friends with Arthur and Sylvia Llewellyn Davies, and when they died, became the legal guardian to their five sons: Peter, John, Michael, Nicholas and Arthur.

Sir J M Barrie
James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir (Forfarshire), the "Thrums" of his fiction, on 9th May 1860, the seventh surviving child of a hand-loom weaver. Educated at Glasgow Academy, Forfar Academy and Dumfries Academy, he took his MA at Edinburgh University. He worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal before moving to London in 1885 to freelance. Success came with a series of sketches of life in bygone Thrums contributed to the St. James's Gazette , published in 1888 as Auld licht idylls , followed by When a man's single (1888) and A Window in Thrums (1889). These works and the novels The Little minister Sentimental Tommy (1896) and its sequel Tommy and Grizel (1900) have been regarded by George Blake and others as examples of the Kailyard School. Leonee Ormond 's J.M. Barrie (1987) argues that it is more rewarding to assess Barrie's regional fiction beside that of Hardy and George Eliot Barrie's dramatised adaptation of The Little minister was enormously successful, persuading him to write increasingly for the stage.

J M Barrie 1860-1937 Introduction
J M Barrie is famous worldwide as the author of Peter Pan , a story loved by generations of children. In his lifetime, Barrie was a celebrity and people flocked to see his plays. Despite fame and fortune he never forgot his childhood home, the 'little red town' of Kirriemuir. A Master of Theatre
Everyone knows the story of the little boy who never grew up. Peter Pan has been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible. It has recently been made into a Hollywood film. But Barrie wrote many more plays - 39 in total - as well as books, prose works, and over 500 articles for newspapers and journals. Plays such as The Admirable Crichto n and Mary Rose are still performed in theatres across Britain. The Road to Fame and Fortune
James Matthew Barrie was born on 9 May 1860, one of ten children. His parents were linen weavers. Barrie was educated at Dumfries Academy, where he developed his writing skills and a love of theatre. After graduating from Edinburgh University, his first writing job was with the

A l w a y s be a l i t t l e kinder than necessary." ~ J. M. Barrie Playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), born on this day in Kirriemuir, Scotland, was is best known for writing the classic children's tale, Peter Pan (1904), about the boy from Neverland who refused to grow up. "Let no one who loves be called unhappy. Even love unreturned has its rainbow," said Barrie who with kindness delighted and inspired generations with his visions of Indians, mermaids, fairies, pirates, and flying children "I fell in love with hard work one fine May morning," he said. "The most precious possession I ever hadmy joy in hard work." Barrie studied at the University of Edinburgh and became a famous freelance writer. He also wrote such sophisticated political satire as The Admirable Crichton (1902) and What Every Woman Knows (1908). Always, he seemed to celebrate the optimism of childhood more than adulthood. "God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December," he observed. Barrie donated the perpetual rights of Peter Pan (the play and book) to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children , today the largest pediatric training and research center in the UK which treats over 100,000 children each year.

JAMES MATTHEW BARRIE
Scottish author (1860-1937)
Biography:
James Matthew Barrie was born in Kiriemuir in 1860. He got his start as a writer for the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edimburgh University. He wrote several plays, such as Ibsens' Ghost The Little Minister The Admirable Chrichton (1902), caricature of social hierarchies, and his most memorable work, Peter Pan or the boy who would never grow up , in 1904, recalling children's imagination.
Barrie's home was very close to Kensington Gardens (London) and it was there that he first met the Llewellyn Davies boys - George, Jack and Peter, to whom he would tell stories. One of these stories was about the youngest boy, Peter, who would one day fly away to Kensington Gardens so that he might be a boy forever. When children died, Peter would take them on a journey to a place called Never Never Land. When George heard the story, he said that "dying must be an awfully big adventure!". Barrie wrote the words down. They would later became the most famous words spoken in Peter Pan.
Barrie was given the Freedom of the City of Edimburgh in 1929.
