Two British Eccentrics I think that Susan will agree with me when I say that in one respect the British remain unequalled. In the production of eccentrics we have no peer! Many such examples in times past were drawn from the nobility and ruling classes. If one were charitable this might be said to derive from a certain amount of inbreeding, and possibly the British public school system. I should perhaps explain to any American readers that the term ‘public’ in ‘public school’ in the UK generally refers to a private school, as opposed to a state school. Although technically open to anyone, the fees required by such notable examples as Eton or Marlborough generally rule out all but the wealthiest parents. Anyway, I digress. The subjects for this month are Lord Berners – 14th Baron Berners of Faringdon House (now maintained by the National Trust), and the Hon. Maurice Baring. Lord Berners Lord Berners (Gerald Tyrwhitt), a product of Eton, is a truly great example of the English eccentric. He was a distinguished diplomat, writer and composer, and also indulged in unorthodox collecting. In this particular case it was other people’s calling or visiting cards. The reason for this was as unusual as the collection itself. When he loaned his house in Rome to friends, he would select from his collection the cards of the most notorious bores in London society. His butler in Rome was then instructed to deliver one or two of the cards each day. By this means the guests would spend much of their holiday diving for cover every time they heard someone at the door!

When Sir James Gunn exhibited his famous painting, "The Conversation Piece," depicting G.K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, and Maurice Baring assembled round a table, Chesterton, with characteristic humor, labeled the three figures, "Baring, over-bearing, and past-bearing." Yet Gunn's group portrait, which now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London, represented much more than a mere assemblage of friends. The three literary figures were considered by the reading public to be inseparable in many respects. They shared a common friendship, a common philosophy, and a common faith. If not as indivisible as the Holy Trinity, they were at least as indomitable as the Three Musketeers. Indeed, in the case of the Belloc-Baring-Chesterton chimera, the battle cry of "all-for-one and one-for-all" is not inappropriate. However, if all three shared much in common, it would be true to say that Baring is the least known of the trio and that, as often as not, he is overlooked. He was certainly overlooked by Bernard Shaw when the latter compared Chesterton and Belloc to two halves of a "very amusing pantomime elephant," which he dubbed the Chesterbelloc. For Shaw, writing his lampoon of the Chesterbelloc in 1908, G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc were now seen so synonymously that they had become nothing more than mouthpieces of a monster larger than both of them. Shaw's potent and amusing image became a literary legend, and it has been the fate of Maurice Baring to live in its shadow. His fame and reputation have been largely eclipsed by the enduring popularity of his two brothers-in-arms. This is both unfortunate and unjust because Baring deserves recognition as a distinguished poet and novelist in his own right.

Biographical Sketch
Thomas Edward Lawrence, archaeologist, soldier, and author, popularly known as Lawrence of Arabia, was born at Tremadoc, North Wales, on August 15, 1888, the second of five sons. His father, Thomas Robert Chapman, and his mother, Sarah Maden, assumed the name of Lawrence. The family was raised in comfort by private means. Lawrence learned to read at a very early age by observing his older brother being taught to read. At the age of four he read newspapers and books, at six he began the study of Latin, and at eight entered Oxford City High School, which he attended until 1907. He developed an interest in literature, archaeology, and architecture, with an emphasis on the Middle Ages. This led him, as a student at the modern history school of Jesus College, Oxford, which he attended from 1907-1910, to choose as his thesis title "The Influence of the Crusades on European Military Architectureto the End of the XIIth Century," published in 1936 as Crusader Castles . In 1909 he had walked most of the nine hundred miles between Palestine and Syria to study castles.

Scope and Contents
The papers of British author Lady Mary Dolling Sanders O'Malley, who wrote under the pseudonym Ann Bridge, consist largely of her holograph manuscripts for books published from 1932 through 1973. Also included are manuscripts of poems, short stories, articles, reviews, and lectures, as well as manuscripts of unpublished works. Correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings and letters, and a few photographs are also present. Lady O'Malley compiled an extensive inventory of her papers which identifies and describes this collection in great detail. Her original list contains much description, identification, and commentary not available in the collection itself, and forms a valuable manuscript in and of itself. The list often includes synopses or transcriptions of correspondence in the collection. The papers have been unpacked and rehoused in archival folders and boxes, and arranged to respect her original order and to facilitate use of the many internal cross references within her inventory. Her original order divides manuscripts for published book-length works (arranged chronologically, 1932-1969) from the rest of the papers, which are subdivided into Appendices A-R. These appendices contain other genres of manuscripts, research material, correspondence, etc., which are also usually arranged chronologically. The following folder list, which identifies the particular boxes and folders in which the collection is now housed, should be used in conjunction with the O'Malley inventory attached. Additional materials not described in Lady O'Malley's original inventory were found and are noted at the end of this list.

Born in London in 1874, Maurice Baring was a man of letters, a scion of a family long prominent in the financial ventures of the British Empire. The son of the 1st Baron Revelstoke (a director of the Bank of England and a senior partner at Baring Bros.) he was educated at Eton and at Cambridge, and joined the diplomatic service in 1898. In 1904 he became a journalist and reported the Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria; later he was a correspondent in Russia and Constantinople. He is credited with having discovered Chekov's work in Moscow and helping to introduce it to the West. Baring is remembered as a versatile, prolific and highly successful writer, who produced articles, plays, biographies, criticism, poetry, translations, stories and novels. He is regarded as a representative of the social culture that flourished in England before World War I, his work highly regarded to this day for the acute intimate portraits of the time.

Quotes of the Day for 10 July 2003 - Memory

It was on this day in 1850 that my favorite US president, Millard Fillmore, took office following the untimely death Zachary Taylor. Alas, I'm the only one that remembers. Memories are such fleeting things. A strange thing is memory, and hope; one looks backward, and the other forward; one is of today, the other of tomorrow. Memory is history recorded in our brain, memory is a painter, it paints pictures of the past and of the day.
Anna Mary Robertson Moses , 1860 - 1961, Grandma Moses Do not trust your memory, it is a net full of holes; the most beautiful prizes slip through it.
Georges Duhamel Memory is the greatest of artists, and effaces from your mind what is unnecessary.
Maurice Baring Memory is a child walking along a seashore. You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things.
