The History of Phrenology on the Web by John van Wyhe Search Overview The organs ... Bibliography Reading phrenology
As a wide-spread cultural phenomena, phrenology coloured many aspects of life in the 19th century. This is reflected in countless works of fiction and non-fiction from the period. Many writers found phrenological language useful for describing personality or put familiar phrenological terms in the mouths of their characters. The main-stream British phrenologists, under the leadership of the Edinburgh lawyer George Combe, developed a philosophy of natural laws which, through the books on this site, spread naturalism into every niche of Victorian Britain and America. When Darwin published his Origin of Species (1859), natural selection was received by a readership already well-versed in doctrines esteeming the authority of natural laws. Rather than overturning this scheme, Darwin's views meshed with them readily. This philosophy, almost a religion, of natural laws was predominantly spread by two books which almost everyone who could read (and many who couldn't) knew of in the 19th century. These were: Combe's The Constitution of Man (1828) and Robert Chambers' Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation Constitution is about how natural laws are the ultimate authorities which Man must obey, and their action leads to progress; disobeying them leads to automatic punishment.

Woman dies in flash flood
By DEBBIE HALL
Bulletin Staff Writer The search for a North Carolina man, missing since the car he was in was swept off a Ridgeway road in a flash flood early Wednesday, will resume this morning. Richard Cox of the Old Dominion Search and Rescue Team said the search for Booker John Henry Hutson of Eden was called off around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. Team members will reassemble at the scene today at 8 a.m. to resume their search of the area where Hutson is believed to have been carried away by the rushing waters, Cox said. Hutson was a passenger in a car driven by Louise Wilson Fuller, 61, of also Eden, who was found drowned in her overturned four-door 1992 Pontiac Bonneville off Meeks Road near the intersection of Meeks and Powell roads, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Tom Foster. Tatum said gauges in the Ridgeway area indicated that 8 to 10 inches of rain fell early Wednesday. Police believe the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m., according to Trooper E.J. O'Connell, who was on the scene Wednesday. Rain, fog and road conditions were blamed for the accident, O'Connell said.

Frustration and resiliency in evidence at local job fair
By MATTHEW MONKS
Bulletin Staff Writer Three hours after arriving at the Newroads job fair Thursday, Janet Crayton fiddled with her wedding band and watched her husband disappear inside a Commonwealth Centre office for a job screening. "He's been trying to find a job and hasn't found one yet. It's been three years" since he was laid off from American of Martinsville, she said. "I been sitting here praying all morning that he gets a job." The Martinsville couple was among hundreds of job-seekers who turned out for the job fair in the former Tultex Corp. plant on Franklin Street. Newroads, a distributor for several major catalog companies, screened 200 to 250 prospective employees for seasonal positions, said Dawn Fields, Newroads human resources manager. She said her company was looking to fill up 400 positions at its distribution facility in Henry County and customer call center in Liberty Fair Mall. After the four-hour fair ended Thursday, she said about 200 applicants had been scheduled for call-back interviews, the second step in the company's hiring process. The Craytons, dressed in matching black and red windbreakers, were among dozens of job-seekers who arrived 90 minutes early and stood outside in the rain waiting for the fair to begin.

72. Dean's Appeal To South Cuts Across Race
Sharpton also said, Maynard Jackson said that the Confederate flag is America s swastika While Barbour played to the code, Dean was trying to crack it.
http://www.commondreams.org/scriptfiles/views03/1107-04.htm
Published on Friday, November 7, 2003 by the Boston Globe Dean's Appeal to South Cuts Across Race by Derrick Z. Jackson NO ONE ACCUSED Howard Dean of whistling Dixie in February when he tried to appeal to Southern white men or to Southern black people about Southern white men. "You know all those white guys riding around with Confederate flags in the back of their pickup trucks? Well, their kids don't have health insurance either." Dean said this before a group of African-Americans at a hamburger joint in Spartanburg, S.C. A Newsday story said, "This blunt appeal to a commonality of racial interests won the moment and a burst of applause." That same month in Washington at the Democratic National Committee winter meeting, Dean said, "I intend to talk about race during this election in the South because the Republicans have been talking about it since 1968 in order to divide us. . . . White folks in the South who drive pickup trucks with Confederate flag decals in the back ought to be voting with us and not them, because their kids don't have health insurance either and their kids need better schools, too." That brought a standing ovation.
