Bancroft Company. Numerous editions exist of the various volumes and subsets.     H. H. Bancroft states "In 1869, having accumulated some sixteen thousand books, manuscripts, and pamphlets, besides maps and cumbersome files of Pacific Coast journals, I determined to go to work" (Vol. 1, p. viii). Many of his materials, for example a manuscript History of British Columbia by A. C. Anderson, were written specifically for him, often by 'old timers' at his request.  Bancroft's interests focused on the western slope of the North American continent, including Alaska and Mexico. His research findings filled 39 volumes, though note that he was aided by many of assistants.
Note that Bancroft, in addition to "Mount Shasta," uses the plural term "Shasta Mountains" (Vol. 1, p. 327) as a general name, in a manner similar to the use of the name by the Hudson's Bay Company and by members of the Wilkes-Emmons overland expedition of 1841 (see Simpson "Letter to McLoughlin" 1842; Dana manuscript journal 1841; Eld manuscript journal... 1841; Wilkes Narratives... 1844).

[MS1010].          Arguello, Luis 1784-1830.  The Diary of Captain Luis Antonio Arguello: The Last Spanish Expedition in California, October 17November 17, 1821
Note that Arguello makes no mention of snow on "The Twins" as they were seen in late October of 1821, consistent with the normal appearance of Mt. Lassen in late summer. The translator's preface contains two pages of commentary on the problems in identifying the route of the 1821 expedition, and states that "The Twins (twin peaks) have been cited by an an equal numbers of scholars as either Shasta or Lassen" and that "A more scholarly publication is being planned after a more definitive study has been completed" (p. 15). Arguello states that the Twins are "in essence very much alike in their size and form and are almost joined," a statement which lends to the interpretation that the hills were Mount Lassen and Broke-off mountains. From a point near Red Bluff, California, this would have been an accurate description.

Guide to Life and Literature
of the Southwest
Surge of Life in the West THE WANDERINGS of Cabeza de Vaca, Coronado, De Soto, and La Salle had long been chronicled, although the chronicles had not been popularized in English, when in 1804 Captain Meriwether Lewis and Captain William Clark set out to explore not only the Louisiana Territory, which had just been purchased for the United States by President Thomas Jefferson, but on west to the Pacific. Their Journals , published in 1814, initiated a series of chronicles comparable in scope, vitality, and manhood adventure to the great collection known as Hakluyt's Voyages Between 1904 and 1907 Reuben Gold Thwaites, one of the outstanding editors of the English-speaking world, brought out in thirty-two volumes his epic Early Western Travels . This work includes the Lewis and Clark Journals , every student of the West, whether Northwest or Southwest, goes to the collection sooner or later. It is a commentary on the values of life held by big rich boasters of patriotism in the West that virtually all the chronicles in the collection remain out of print. An important addendum to the Thwaites collection of Early Western Travels is "The Southwest Historical Series," edited by Ralph P. Bieber twelve volumes, published 1931-43, by Clark, Glendale, California.

Mark, which will be rather long and with which I am still dissatisfied although I have rewritten it two or three times. After all it is no joke to summarise its rise, flourishing and decay in eight or ten pages. If I can possibly get the time I will send it to you in order to hear your opinion. And I myself would like to be quit of the stuff and get back to the natural sciences. It is funny to see from the so-called primitive peoples how the conception of holiness arose. What is originally holy is what we have taken over from the animal kingdomthe bestial; "human laws" are as much of an abomination in relation to this as they are in the gospel to the divine law. 1882 Letters Letters Archive Marx Engels Internet Archive

In 1886, the famous American historian Hubert Howe Bancroft (18321918) relatedthe Okanagan myth of their lost island paradise of Samah-tumi-whoo-lah
http://www.slowmotiondoomsday.com/waywardsun.html
The Wayward Sun The Velikovskian It is sunset at the camp of the tribe known as the Utes. Preparations for the annual Sun-Dance have begun. Men and women draped in rabbit-skin robes are drawn to the fire's glow. Dishes of simmering turtle, lizard, insects, and generous servings of berries and seed are shared around the circle. It is time. An elder rises and passed a lined hand over his buffalo-skin cloak. The children are immediately alert, their eyes wide with anticipation. Listen now, on this feast of the Sun-Dance, to the Utes' myth of the taming of the sun-god: Once upon a time Ta-wats, the hare-god, was sitting with his family by the camp-fire in the solemn woods, anxiously waiting for the return of Ta-va (the wayward sun-god). Wearied with long watching, the hare-god fell asleep, and the sun-god came so near that he scorched the naked shoulder of Ta-wats. Foreseeing the vengeance which would be thus provoked, he fled back to his cave beneath the earth. Ta-wats awoke in great anger, and speedily determined to go and fight the sun-god. After a long journey of many adventures the hare-god came to the brink of the earth, and there watched long and patiently, till at last the sun-god coming out he shot an arrow at his face, but the fierce heat consumed the arrow ere it had finished its intended course; then another was sped, but that also was consumed; and another, and another, till only one remained in his quiver, but this was the magical arrow that had never failed its mark. Ta-wats, holding it in his hand, lifted the barb to his eye and baptized it in a divine tear; then the arrow was sped and struck the sun-god full in the face, and the sun was shivered into a thousand fragments which fell to the earth, causing a general conflagration.

Asian American History's Overdue Emergence
By ROGER DANIELS
Although Asian Americans have played a significant role in American life for more than a century, ALSO SEE:
A photo gallery: Asian American History's Overdue Emergence
Colloquy Live: Read a transcript of a live, online discussion with Roger Daniels, a professor of history at the University of Cincinnati and the author of several books about the history of Asian immigrants to the United States, about the study of Asian Americans.
Young Historians Are Reshaping Asian American Studies

serious academic interest in their history is a relatively recent phenomenon. The first generations of professional American historians either ignored them or demeaned them. After Asians were almost totally barred from immigrating to the United States in 1924, successor academic generations began to pay more attention, but they treated Asian Americans as victims of mob violence, unjust federal immigration statutes, and state laws and municipal ordinances limiting such choices as occupation and residence. Only recently have historians begun to see Asian Americans as subjects, rather than objects, of history.
The evolution of Asian American history has been not unlike the patterns in subdisciplines such as African American and women's history, but it has been slower at least in part because so few Asian Americans participated in the discipline until well after World War II.

Introduction: Treasures of Americana by Ronald D. Patkus
Of course other institutions built up Americana collections during this period. The Library of Congress emerged as an especially important repository. In 1832 George Cochin Washington sold personal papers of George Washington to the library. Six years later the library made the first of several purchases of James Madison material from Dolly Madison. In 1848 the library acquired papers of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton from their respective families. During the later half of the nineteenth century Ainsworth Rand Spofford, the Librarian of Congress from 1864-1897, acquired such collections as the revolutionary papers of the Marquis de Rochambeau and the Peter Force Collection of Americana, which featured 429 volumes of manuscripts on the Revolution and the founding of the Republic. In addition to collections of books, Vassar librarians acquired individual American literary and historical works, especially as they appeared in first editions. Today most of these examples form part of the Grille collection. The items in Grille have been obtained via gift, bequest, and purchase. Among the early historical works, titles relating to government and political affairs are especially prevalent. A number of them concern Dutchess County and the State of New York. Also of note are travel books describing tours through one or another of the geographical regions of the United States.
