Scottish writer for boys, noted for the adventure story THE CORAL ISLAND (1858), which Robert Louis Stevenson acknowledged as the formative influence of his own love of the South Seas. The book has not been out of print since it first appeared. Several abridged editions have been published for young readers. Ballantyne's narrative skill, colourful settings, and resourcefulness of his heroes have secured his popularity throughout generations. "For many months after this we continued to live on our island in uninterrupted harmony and happiness. Sometimes we went out afishing in the lagoon, and sometimes went ahunting in the woods, or ascended to the mountain-top, by way of variety, although Peterkin always asserted that we went for the purpose of hailing any ship that might chance to heave in sight. But I am certain that none of us wished to be delivered from our captivity, for we were extremely happy, and Peterkin used to say that as we were very young we should not feel the loss of a year or two."

Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book

As the book's title suggests, gold-panning in the Cariboo is the centrepiece of the story. However, the plot is less conventional than most such tales with the addition of a small girl, a lost will and some background of urban Toronto in 1858 and 1867. The Preface is dedicated: 'To Boy who once lived in British Columbia and now lives in California. "Lest he forget"'. 382 [ornament] /TALES/OF/THE NORTHERN SEAS./ [pict. ornament] /London:/THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY;/56, PATERNOSTER ROW; 65, ST. The contents include a description of the land around the North Pole, an account of 'Esquimaux' life and whaling in Baffin Bay. Each chapter ends with a brief, religious homily as befits a Religious Tract Society author. 383 [WALSHE, Elizabeth Hely].
