Ballantyne (1825-1894) - in full Robert Michael - pseudonym: Comus Scottish writer for boys, noted for the adventure story THE CORAL ISLAND (1858), which Robert Louis Stevenson acknowledged as the formative influence of his own love of the South Seas. The book has not been out of print since it first appeared. Several abridged editions have been published for young readers. Ballantyne's narrative skill, colorful settings, and resourcefulness of his heroes have secured his popularity throughout generations. "For many months after this we continued to live on our island in uninterrupted harmony and happiness. Sometimes we went out afishing in the lagoon, and sometimes went ahunting in the woods, or ascended to the mountain-top, by way of variety, although Peterkin always asserted that we went for the purpose of hailing any ship that might chance to heave in sight. But I am certain that none of us wished to be delivered from our captivity, for we were extremely happy, and Peterkin used to say that as we were very young we should not feel the loss of a year or two." (from The Coral Island , abridged edition) R.M. Ballantyne, the son of a newspaper editor and nephew of the Ballantyne brothers (see below), was born in Edinburgh. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy (1835-37) and privately. Bad financial investments caused the family's ruin and Ballantyne's life changed thoroughly. Between the ages of 16 and 22 he was employed in Canada by the Hudson Bay Company, trading with local Indians in remote areas. In 1847 he returned to Scotland. He was a clerk at the North British Railway Company in Edinburgh for two years, and worked then for the paper-makers Alexander Cowan and Company. From 1849 to 1855 he was junior partner of Thomas Constable and Company, a printing house.

R M Ballantyne
Novelist
Robert Michael Ballantyne was born at 25 Ann Street, Edinburgh on 24th April 1825, the son of Alexander Thomson Ballantyne . His uncles James and John Ballantyne were involved with Archibald Constable in the publishing of Sir Walter Scott 's novels and the family was ruined financially by the crash of the business in 1826. Following his education at the Edinburgh Academy Ballantyne entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company and between 1841 and 1847 worked with them as a clerk at the Red River Settlement in Canada. The experience was to provide him with the background for his first adventure tale for young people, The Young fur traders which followed the adventures of a young man called Charles Kennedy. Published in 1856, it was a loosely autobiographical account of Ballantyne's own time with the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada and its success prompted a series of adventure stories set at sea or in the American west and the jungles of Africa. Between then and his death in 1894 Ballantyne published some eighty novels which echoed the Victorian enthusiasm for the ideals of service to the British empire. The best known of these is

To read books as Microsoft eBooks, you will need the Microsoft eBook Reader , which you can download free. This can also be extended so as to read the books aloud. We have converted all of these books to Microsoft eBook format, which can be emailed upon application. Note that the transcription into e-text form was done by scanning the oldest available text, often a first edition, or a very early one. The texts were then converted using TextBridge OCR, and proofed using our own software. They were then read carefully, but errors creep through and we do not claim perfection. Texts may therefore be updated from time to time.

    Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825-1894)
    A Short Biography
Hudson Bay, The Coral Island, Martin Rattler Robert Michael Ballantyne was born at Edinburgh, April 24, 1825. His father, Alexander Ballantyne, was brother and junior partner of John and James Ballantyne, the printers and friends of Sir Walter Scott. His mother was Randall Scott Grant, daughter of a Dr. Grant of Inverness. Of his boyhood there is not much to tell. His sister, Randall Ballantyne, who possessed a good deal of literary ability, used to speak of him as a bright and clever boy, not much given to hard study, but fond of reading and of story-telling, with a decided turn for adventure and romance; always affectionate and upright. He attended the Edinburgh Academy for some time; but his regular schooling was meagre, and one of the regrets of his life was that he had made so little use of his opportunities in this respect, such as they were. The ease and fluency with which he wrote were mainly the result of practice, and they increased as his years advanced. While Ballantyne was still a boy, the family circumstances made it necessary that he should begin the battle of life on his own account. He tells us in his

    Scottish author (1825-1894)
    Biography:
Robert Michael Ballantyne was born in Edimburgh in 1825. Due to finantial problems, he was forced to find a job and, at the age of 16, he began working in Canada for Hudson Bay Company, trading with local indians in remote areas. In 1848, again in Scotland, his first book appeared: Hudson Bay or the Life in the Wilds of North America . At the beginning his books were mainly autobiogrphical, depicting life and experiences in Canada, but later on, he also wrote about adventures elsewhere. His writing style is said to show strong influence from Walter Scott , the Scottish romantic novelist par excellence.
From 1856 on he devoted himself to writing, and published over 80 books, mainly meant for young readers. He was also a regular contributor to Boy's Own Papers , a magazine which produced patriotic adventure stories set in the remote parts of the British Empire. During his lifetime, he was considered to be the hero of Victorian youth, for his books showed strong puritanism and echoed Victorian enthusiasm for the ideals of service to the British Empire.
Among all his novels, he is mainly remebered for
