Ray Stannard Baker and the Legacy of Progressivism In histories of Progressivism, Ray Stannard Baker (1870-1946) has been a man for all seasons: frontier democrat; spokesman for a status-anxious middle class; (Hofstadter's Age of Reform [1955]); and, most recently, representative of a generation of reformers whose European experience created a trans-Atlantic tradition of social justice and welfare (Rodgers, Atlantic Crossing [1998]) Among these and other Bakers, the Baker of my Ray Stannard Baker: The Mind and Thought of a Progressive (1966)—a study of Baker's muckraking journalism, his fictional "adventures in contentment" written under the pen name "David Grayson," and his work on Woodrow Wilson—was more in the mold of Hofstadter's post-progressivism than I then realized, specifically its themes of a conflict between "realism" (hard-hitting factuality) and "moralism" (softminded idealism) and of Baker's eventual retreat from reform. In a minor twist on Hofstadter's notion of progressive "pseudo-reform," I viewed this retreat as a debate between the journalist Baker and his literary alter-ego David Grayson, blaming "Grayson" for Baker's increasing tendency to overlook harsh realties, whether the inequities of Jim Crow (in Following the Color Line [1908]) or Wilson's sins of omission and commission (in Woodrow Wilson: Life and Letters

Baker, Ray Stannard.
"Wisconsin, the Most Adventurous and Yet Level-Headed of States." The American Magazine 83, no. 2 (February 1917) : 37, 59.
[Baker (1870-1946) grew up in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, worked as a journalist and editor in Chicago, gained famed as a muckraker, wrote articles about the reform movement led by Robert M. La Follette, Sr., and won the 1940 Biography Pulitzer Prize for his eight-volume Woodrow Wilson : Life and Letters , published by Doubleday, Page, from 1927-1939.] "We who love Wisconsin knew that trouble was coming when the world suddenly woke up to the fact that here was a state interested not merely in cattle, corn, cheese, copper and pine timber, but in ideas, the 'Wisconsin idea,' and began to praise her for the excellence of her Government and the greatness of her university. It is a dangerous thing to be noted for ideas, especially in America, where we still carry such a reputation rather awkwardly." "Wisconsin is the least partisan, the most fearless-thinking of the states; and its most important contribution to the nation is its hard-wrought political and educational pioneering and experimentation."
