Early History of Bowling Green, Ohio Taken from the Commemorative, Historical and Biographical Record of Wood County, Ohio: Its Past and Present T HE seat of justice of Wood county, near its geographical center, is admirably located for the purposes of trade and commerce, as well as for the administration of county affairs. Two railroad lines, with their branches, bring the town within forty minutes' ride of the southern and northern townships, while a stone road, running east, insures to the people of Center and adjoining townships a good thoroughfare at all seasons, and easy access to this central trading place. Prior to 1870, the present busy town was a quiet hamlet. In that year the Census enumerator found 906 inhabitants there. Ten years after there were 1, 539 inhabitants credited to the corporation, while in 1890, no less than 3,467 residents were reported. The population in the fall of 1895 was alleged to exceed 4,000. Basing the number of inhabitants on the number of voters (911 votes cast for candidates for commissioner) in November, 1895, the population, at that date, must have been a little above the 4000 mark. In 1890 there were 786 dwelling houses in the town for the 797 families reported. Within the past six years many modern houses have been built, bringing the total up to 1,000 dwellings, few, if any, of which are tenantless. The construction of business houses has been carried on, until now the business center extends from Mt. Ararat northward to a point near the last location of John M. Hannon's pioneer tavern.

The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.

    Birmingham Branch (1840+)
The city of Birmingham was a very important center from which the church spread during the 1800s.
    Birmingham Branches 1840-1945
The boundaries and names referring to the Birmingham Branch changed considerably over time as other branches were created or the meeting places changed. Before 1852 the Birmingham Branch was also referred to as the Livery Street Branch because of that is where the branch had meetings. In 1852 there were about a thousand members of the church in the Birmingham Branch which was divided into four separate branches: Hockley, Cambridge Street, Bristol Road, and Ashted. The first three of these included parts of the center of Birmingham, however for the period 1852-1868, this history will only deal with the Cambridge Street Branch. Separate histories will be written for the Hockley, Bristol Road, and Ashted Branches. The Cambridge Street Branch was also known by other names as the meeting location changed during this period of time. Other names that it was known by were Crescent, New Hall, and Oxford Street Branch. The various Birmingham Branches were eventually amalgamated into a single branch again in 1868 at which time there were about 500 members in the area. From that time until 1872 the branch was known as the Hockley Branch, but after 14 May 1872 the name was changed to the Birmingham Branch.

NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHEOLOGY AND CULTURE HISTORY Although Native American populations have occupied Georgia from the Paleoindian period to the present, Fort Pulaski National Monument has not yet been archeological surveyed for evidence of past Native American activities that may have occurred within its boundaries. It is therefore necessary to rely on cultural chronologies that have been developed from archeological investigations conducted elsewhere in the Savannah River Valley to provide a framework for discussing those Native American cultures that might be present at Fort Pulaski National Monument. Paleoindian (ca. 10,000 - 8000 b.c. The earliest known Native American populations to inhabit the Americas are generally referred to as the Paleoindians. During the late Altonian Subage of the Wisconsinan Age, forty thousand years ago, the Laurentide Ice sheet extended south into what is today the Great Lakes Region. Global water was taken up by the massive ice sheets, exposing portions of the continental shelf which are now under several hundred feet of water (Delcourt and Delcourt 1981:141). Periodically, during extreme intervals of glacial freezing, a submerged land bridge connecting Siberia to Alaska was exposed in the Bering Sea. It is generally believed that Paleoindians migrated across the Bering Straits land bridge during these low water intervals.
