Induction into the English department honor society as a student sparked the curiosity of an alumna so much, it led to her graduate research project, which details the "annotated literary highlights" of St. Lawrence County.
Christyanna LaFaver '02 has created a Web site, Reading St. Lawrence County , as part of her work toward a master's degree in English at the University of Rochester. On the site, she states, "Late in my sophomore year at St. Lawrence University, I was inducted into The Irving Bacheller Society, the English department’s honor society. As an English literature major with graduate school aspirations, applying for membership was all but expected and I was certainly delighted to receive the honor and the ability to type it proudly onto my resume. But who exactly was this Irving Bacheller? And if he was so important to the English department, why had I never heard of him before? Each inductee traditionally receives a copy of Eben Holden , which we were told was Bacheller’s best-known novel, although to most of us, “Eben Holden” was merely the name of a dining hall on campus...Instantly curious, I flipped to the introduction and its first line, a compelling proclamation, read, “Irving Bacheller (1859-1950) is Northern New York’s most important literary figure and

A List 4/1/02 SLU PROFESSOR'S PRESS REPRINTS NORTH COUNTRY NOVEL CANTON - A new paperback edition of a novel set in the North Country - and considered to be the first "best-seller" of the 20th century - has been published by a St. Lawrence professor. Eben Holden, A Tale of the North Country , by Irving Bacheller, was originally published in 1900; the new edition has been published by Glover Publishing, operated by St. Lawrence University Piskor Professor of English Albert Glover. Bacheller (1859-1950) graduated from St. Lawrence in 1882 and is northern New York's most important literary figure; Eben Holden is his best-known book. Set mostly in "Paradise Valley" (Bacheller's name for the Canton-Pierrepont-Potsdam area) during the mid-19th century, the novel tells the story of young man's coming of age under the tutelage of his wise mentor and guardian, Eben Holden, a character who embodies the Yankee virtues of hard work and honesty. The narrative includes an array of poems, songs, descriptions and folklore that convey a sense of life in the St. Lawrence Valley at the time of the American Civil War. An audio version of the novel was recently produced by North Country Public Radio. Eben Holden was an immediate best-seller and established Bacheller's reputation as an author. The new paperback edition features cover art ("Crossings") by Ogdensburg artist John Morrow and an introduction by Doug Welch of Pierrepont. Copies are now available at the St. Lawrence University Bookstore and will soon be available at regional bookshops and gift shops; copies may also be ordered online at

Shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, teen-aged Joe Roberts of Galena is sent to live with relatives in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Unhappy with life in Vicksburg, and unable to cope with the mounting tensions brought on by opposing ideologies, Joe runs away to join the Union Navy in Cairo. In Cairo, he becomes a powder monkeya runner who transports charges of powder from the magazine deep in the ship's hold, to the guns on deckon the iron clad, Carondelet. Sailing out of Cairo, Joe sees the fall of Fort Henry, the battle for Fort Donelson, the taking of Island 10, the navy battle at Memphis, and the siege of Vicksburg. A visit to the prison camp at Cairo, and an extended stay at the military hospital there because of a bad case of malaria give some indication of the Union installations in the city. Powder Monkey is a thoroughly researched and adequate retelling of the fight for the Mississippi River during the Civil War; however, credibility is lost with the surprise ending which reports all of Joe's family well, and reveals the identity of his father who had been lost to him for fifteen years.
