Pioneer of the Digital Age
"Digital Age" may bring to mind such things as Silicon Valley, Yahoo, eBay, Windows, and online banking, or if we're a bit older punch cards, DOS, and Packman. But it all began much earlier, before there was even an electrical outlet in the wall. A small but unusual exhibition at the Beinecke Library documents the career of one of the pioneers of computer design, Charles Babbage (1791-1871), mathematician, physicist, social engineer, scientific reformer, statistician, philosopher of science, and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in Cambridge University. The books, letters, manuscripts, and documents in the display come from the collection formed by Alfred Van Sinderen, Yale '45, chairman and CEO of the Southern New England Telephone Company until his retirement in 1985. The collection was presented to the Beinecke Library shortly before Mr. Van Sinderen's death in 1998. The exhibition will continue until September 16, 1999. Mechanical devices for performing arithmetic computations go back at least to the 1600s, when both Blaise Pascal and G. W. von Leibniz invented

An Essay On ...
The Industrial Revolution

Introduction:
Three material inventions combined to bring the period (the Middle Ages) to a close and to usher in the modern world. In each case the actual origin of the invention is a matter of dispute.
  • The Mariner's Compass seems to have been introduced into Europe by Italian traders at the time of the Crusades, and to have been used in the later Middle Ages by English merchants voyaging to Iceland.
  • Gunpowder was known in the thirteenth century, but was first put to warlike use by the Florentines early in the fourteenth.
  • The printing-press was invented in the first half of the fifteenth century, probably by Lourens Coster of Haarlem, thus, it seems, the invention occurred prior to Gutenberg of Mainz. Of these three inventions the work, not of monks or knights, but of traders and burghers the first made ocean navigation possible, the second ended the military domination of the feudal lords, and the third ended the clerical monopoly to learning. Without the first two it is unlikely that the new civilization of the West, jammed between Islam and the Atlantic, would even have survived. Without the third its survival would have been culturally sterile.
There were a large number of 18th century inventors, some known and of whom much has been written, a few of whom we shall shortly refer; but there were a greater number whose names and the nature of their inventions have been lost to history.

In the case of Charles Babbage, his reputation as "an irascible genius" can be understood much better if one knows that he suffered a number of physical ailments. In an attempt to shed some further light on the later life of this man, we present some of the medical reports produced after his death. About References Back to Top References

    Babbage, Charles

    Charles Babbage Matematico inglese.

Quellen:
