Haar eerste gepubliceerde roman was "Sense and Sensibility" (1811).

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817)
Jane Austen famously stated that 'three or four families in a country village is the thing to work on,' and she remained steadfast in applying this trustworthy formula. The great strength of her novels is the social observations they contain: Austen employed a strong sense of irony in her critique of aristocratic disaffection and the pretensions of the nouveau riche. With a measured sardonic eye she was able to summarise social mores and the restraints suffered by women in Regency England. Born in the village of Steventon, Hampshire, to a rector, she began to write as a teenager and her early work display a keen perception of the absurd. It was not until the family move to Bath that she started to write seriously using the spa town as a location. She had the support of her brother Henry who helped negotiate with a publisher and the first novel

Jane Austen
by G.G. Urwin, M.A., PH. D. (London)
from ' Humorists Of The Eighteenth Century There were plenty of women writers by the end of the century, but their novels were chiefly concerned with highly coloured romance in aristocratic circles, often disguised as history, or with mystery-horror stories involving pathetic love affairs. Of humour they had none. If one wishes to find an example of humorous writing by a woman born before the present century, one must always refer to Jane Austen. Yet, although her works were published in the 1800's, her style belongs to an earlier period, and, indeed, much of the preliminary writing of her novels was done before the turn of the century. Because she was born in the countryside and spent all her life in the provinces, she dealt with the secluded parts of England; and as she was accustomed only to the commonplace events of upper middle-class society, she confined her characters to the genteel men and women whose main purpose in life was to live comfortably on incomes derived from well-managed estates. She was a snob, a gentle snob: for her, poverty was an unfortunate state of affairs that was either ignored or rectified by kind friends; vice did not exist, and mankind's worst failing was vulgarity; no moral lesson was implied in any of her books because she saw no reason to stress principles that she took for granted. Because she never married yet was by nature a most affectionate woman, her short life was devoted to the concerns of her family. To her, Bath and Southampton were centres of polite society; her days were spent in rectories, well-appointed apartments, or manor houses; her pleasures were those derived from social gatherings in the home or in the houses of friends, or from carrying on a leisurely correspondence.

Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage. Austen's best-known books include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1813) and EMMA (1816). Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was tutored at home. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. On her father's retirement, the family moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. After the death of her father in 1805, she lived with her mother and sister in Southampton and moved in 1809 to a large cottage in the village of Chawton. Austen never married.

Austen lived her life in an upper-middle class family during the early 19th century in England. It is the day-to-day life of people in this society that is the primary focus of her work.
The near perfection for which Austen's novels are known today is a result of her extensive rewriting of these works during her life. Only four of her novels were published during her lifetime, and her contemporary society was, for the most part, unaware of her outstanding achievements.
Austen's works combine romantic comedy with social satire and a witty view of her contemporary society.

On this day in 1815, Jane Austen completed Emma , the last of her novels to appear in her lifetime. That it appeared with a dedication to the Prince Regent, a person whose debauched lifestyle Austen had condemned, and a type she would normally satirize, is a story that might itself have stepped from one of her books all of them written by "laughing at myself or other people." Jane Austen Remaindered
On this day in 1817, Jane Austen died, at the age of forty-one. She had been increasingly ill over the previous year and a half, probably from a hormonal disorder like Addison's Disease. Austen's devoted older sister, Cassandra, inherited all the author's papers, from which she expurgated some but not all of Jane's enduring wit and one-liners.
