In a Celtic society of the ancient world, the tribal communities were divided into various classes. Above the common people such as the peasants and the artisans, there were the warrior classes, and then the ruling classes, such as the kings or the chieftains, who were are above the rest. But there was another class of people that enjoyed a very status. They were known as the druids. This page covered both historical and mythical accounts of the learned men and women. The first part of the page contained background on the origin of druids in ancient Gaul and Britain, as well as their place in the Celtic society. The second part there is a list of articles on the mythical characters in Irish and Welsh literature. The characters are not only about druids, but there are also articles about bards.

William Lawes Composer at the Court of Charles I May 1st, 2002 marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of William Lawes. Biography CD Reviews An Appreciation Links and Performance Dates last updated 20/10/'02 William Lawes - An Appreciation: As with many composers, it is difficult not to hear reflected in his music something of the life of William Lawes. The opulence of the King and Court which employed him is displayed to the full in the richness of his scoring; and it is easy to see something reckless, careless, daring - that word 'cavalier' - in his use of dissonance and the unexpected twists as each consort sett unfolds. For William Lawes was indeed a cavalier, born in 1602 to a musical family and, after having served a varied musical apprenticeship, appointed a musician to King Charles. William Lawes seems to have been, as much as a common man could be, a beloved friend of Charles, someone the King admired both for his music and for his person. The portrait of him shows a beautiful man half hidden in shadow, a handsome puckish trickster but one with a good heart, a confident and open-eyed man; someone you would want to know. Then came the Civil War. England was ripped in two by new ideas of religious conscience and by a questioning of that very opulence of the Court which illustrated its separation from the ordinary life of men. William Lawes enlisted in the army in defence of his Sovereign who, for his part, insisted that Lawes remain out of danger - an officer would be out of reach of musket-shot. We do not know the exact sequence of events, but in 1645 at the bloody Siege of Chester, Lawes became involved in a skirmish, several sources suggesting that he performed some dashing act, almost betraying Charles' earnest desire for him to keep himself safe, and in that act William Lawes was shot in the head and killed. The King mourned his servant, it is said, even above one of his own kin.

He also produced two novels, The Sea Kings in England and The Handwriting on the Wall Atterbury, Francis , and published sermons, which, with his letters to Swift, Pope, and other friends, constitute the foundation of his literary reputation. During the reign of the Tories he enjoyed much preferment, having been successively Canon of Exeter, Dean of Christ Church, Dean of Westminster, and Bishop of Rochester. His Jacobite principles, however, and his participation in various plots got him into trouble, and in 1722 he was confined in the Tower, deprived of all his offices, and ultimately banished.
    La búsqueda de su origen.
    Localizado a cien kilómetros al oeste de Londres, en la llanura de Salisbury, se encuentra uno de los monumentos milenarios más inquietantes de la humanidad. Con sus colosales rocas, cuyos pesos varían de dos a treinta y cinco toneladas, Stonehenge es la construcción megalítica más fascinante de la historia. Su construcción se remonta a la noche de los tiempos, a civilizaciones que no dejaron a su paso escritos que nos permitieran conocer con seguridad su origen. Nadie conocía el origen de este complejo megalítico, pero algunos lo sugerían a través de las leyendas y la tradición. Algunos como Geoffrey de Monmouth (aproximadamente 1100-1154 dC.) en la Edad Media, relataba en sus crónicas la creencia popular de que el conjunto era un circulo de gigantes petrificados, de allí que se le conociera como la "Danza de los Gigantes". Pero el mismo escritor del siglo XII nos ha hecho llegar otra leyenda que sugería que las piedras fueron llevadas allí por el Mago Merlin, desde Irlanda, con la ayuda de unos "artefactos", para conmemorar un entierro masivo de bretones. Lo cierto es que el pueblo sajón les recordaban las vigas en las cuales colgaban a los criminales, por lo cual empezaron a conocerlo como "Stonehenge" (La horca de piedra o la piedra del colgado).

    24 July - 12 September 1997 Introduction
    At the moment on 30 January 1649 when the executioner's axe severed the neck of Charles I, the crown of England passed by inheritance to his son, the eighteen-year-old Prince Charles. But the heir was a proscribed exile, and, constitutionally, England was now a republic, later acquiring a Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, who performed some regal functions. It was not until May 1660 that Charles II was able to return to his kingdom and begin his effective reign. Viewed from a royalist perspective, the Restoration was both an attempt to put the clock back to 1641, and a daring experiment in political innovation. In his ceremonial role Charles was an anointed monarch, conferring legitimacy on a mediaeval hierarchy of peers, bishops and judges. His court the source of much important poetry and patronage of poets was a household as well as the headquarters of a national bureaucracy. Yet in his personal views he was a man caught up in the most advanced enthusiasms of his age. He was hedonistic, tolerant, sceptical, sexually permissive, deeply interested in new developments in science and architecture, an admirer of Hobbes, a supreme opportunist in politics, and an enemy of idealism however and wherever expressed. The Monash University Library's holdings of writings from the period, while originally assembled to provide a kind of antechamber to its world-ranking eighteenth-century collections, have now taken on an importance of their own which is augmented by the availability of many other sources for the period on microform. Taken together, the rare-books and the microform holdings permit in-depth study of a kind that twenty years ago would only have been possible in a handful of libraries in the northern hemisphere. It is an achievement on which the University has every reason to congratulate itself.

    John Aubrey Antiquary and author of Brief Lives , Aubrey had many friends including Ashmole, Lilly, Gadbury and Coley. His collection of informal biographies have been used many times, but what is often not realised is that he collected birth data to go alongside them. Unfortunately, none of those who have edited and published his work have presented that information. The edition by Richard Barber for the Folio Society reproduces the opening page of Aubrey's account of his own life which contains his nativity. The data are 11 March 1625/6 OS, 5.14.44 am, latitude 51°30N (Malmesbury, Wiltshire). Harvey quotes Coley as having used this time, but seems unaware of Aubrey's own representation of his nativity (above). The following is a reproduction of the chart in modern form, although the above chart is incomplete having no house cusp positions other than the Ascendant and 3rd house, and Moon, Jupiter and Saturn have also been omitted. The recalculated positions (planets are marked "comp.") have been inserted and rounded to reflect these omissions. var sc_project=218721; var sc_invisible=1;
