ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
Aubrey, John (1626-1697)
Miscellanies upon the following subjects : I. Day-fatality; II. Local-fatality; III. Ostenta; IV. Omens; V. Dreams ... XXI. Second-sighted persons; XXII. The discovery of two murders by an apparition / Collected by John Aubrey. The second edition, with large additions. To which is prefixed some account of his life.
London : Printed for A. Bettesworth etc., 1721.
The English virtuoso John Aubrey (1626-97) was fascinated by reports of supernatural phenomena and corresponded with the Scottish savant Dr James Garden on the latter’s encounters with ‘second sight’. This is the ability to foresee future events by divine revelation. Aubrey’s Miscellanies gives the first account of second sight in print. His data is derived from Garden. Indeed there was widespread interest in second sight. For example, copy of a letter from Garden to Aubrey on second sight is to be found among John Locke’s manuscripts.

He was educated at Oxford at Trinity College, then studied law in London at the Middle Temple. Later in the 17th century, Aubrey proposed that Stonehenge was a temple built by the Druids, the priests of the pagan Celts who came to centuries immediately preceding the Christian era. This theory is still widely believed, despite the fact that it was disproved in the 20th century by modern archaeological techniques.

Aubrey's 'Brief Lives'
April 5, 2002 John Aubrey (1626-1697) was singularly unsuccessful in his worldly affairs. He was born wealthy, but lost all his property in a tangle of disastrous lawsuits. Without property or responsibility, and well-loved by a large circle of friends (including some of the leading men of his time), he was free to devote himself to sociability and his antiquarian interests. Aubrey was a pioneering archaeologist and an indefatigable researcher. He had lived through the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, and he was acutely aware that since then everything had changed: continuity had been broken, the whole pre-Puritan world had passed out of existence, and he felt a strong urge to preserve what he could. Nevertheless, Aubrey lived in the present: he was one of the original members of the Royal Society and he remained fully abreast of the advances of his day. The dreadful Oxford don Anthony Wood, who was preparing a dictionary of Oxford writers and churchmen, enlisted Aubrey to collect biographical information. Aubrey's biographical researches soon took on a life of their own. He wrote and collected vast amounts of material, but he was constitutionally unable to bring any work to a finished state. He managed to see only one book into print in his lifetime, his

  • John Aubrey
Antiquarian. Oxford educated, he was the author of numerous books on various subjects, from folklore, to biography, to natural history. He is best known, however, as an early student of Britian's megalithic structures, beginning his exhaustive surveying at the young age of 22. Aubrey was the first to tentatively claim that Avebury's stone circle was a Druidic temple, though he was cautious of such a claim. Later in 1694, it would be John Toland who, after speaking with Aubrey and viewing his manuscript Monumenta Britannica (also called Templa Druidim ), encouraged the publishing of some of the findings. In the Society of Antiquaries' excavations of 1921 to 1925, a series of holes dug into the chalky ground of Stonehenge were discovered; it was later determined that they were dug to hold the original timber pylons, and constituted the earliest stage of Stonehenge's development. The fifty-six holes were named the Aubrey Holes in honor of John Aubrey. WORKS:

Biography AUBREY, JOHN (1626-1697). —Antiquary, was a country gentleman who inherited estates in several counties in England, which he lost by litigation and otherwise. He devoted himself to the collection of antiquarian and miscellaneous observations, and gave assistance to Dugdale and Anthony  -Wood in their researches. His own investigations were extensive and minute, but their value is much diminished by his credulity, and want of capacity to weigh evidence. His only publication is his Miscellanies, a collection of popular superstitions, etc., but he left various collections, which were edited and publ. in the 19th century.
