Building the Library

Creating the Neighborhood Libraries

The history of The New York Public Library begins more than 100 years ago. As the 19th century drew to a close, New York, the greatest city in America, still had no real public library. But thanks to a handful of visionaries and millions upon millions of users, The New York Public Library today is internationally recognized as one of the greatest institutions of its kind. The Library's importance is a function not only of its sheer size and scope, but also of its unique character. It is the only library that features both world-acclaimed research centers and a large network of neighborhood branch libraries, all of which may be used by the public, free of charge. The Library is also distinguished by its long-standing tradition of serving the local community, as well as the international world of learning. Its branch system is one of the largest in the world. Computer technology makes its catalogs of holdings accessible to users worldwide. The Library's collections themselves reflect the profoundly democratic and all-encompassing nature of the institution. Numbering into the tens of millions, its holdings range from the most venerable monuments of human culture such as the Gutenberg Bible and Jefferson's manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence to materials that document the everyday lives of otherwise anonymous people.

James Renner Date: May 2003 Trinity Cemetery helped to shape the history of northern Manhattan to what it is today. Many of the persons whose remains are interred here shaped not only the history of the area but that of the United States. After the war, the land was bought into private ownership. The last person to privately own the property was John James Audubon, the naturalist, who bought the land in 1839. In 1842 Trinity Parish purchased part of the Audubon estate. This newly purchased area (24 acres) extended from 153rd to 155th Streets and from Amsterdam Avenue to Riverside Drive. The newly formed cemetery was established as a result of an ordinance passed by New York City prohibiting any further burials in lower Manhattan due to the fact that overcrowding in the existing cemeteries was the result of deaths caused by smallpox, typhoid and cholera. These were creating unsanitary conditions due to the high mortality rate. The first burial took place a year after the purchase. As time passed, Broadway was extended northward. The cemetery was forced to exhume graves and relocate them toward the Hudson River to make way for the newly expanded boulevard. The cemetery as we know it today is now divided into two divisions. The western division contains a majority of the older grave sites and mausoleums dating from 1843. The eastern division has more recent mausoleums and graves. Since the late 1970s, new mausoleums have been built along the Riverside Drive side of the cemetery. Near these newly created mausoleums is a small artificial pond with miniature Canadian Geese and European Shell Ducks.

HOME LAMPS ADS TROLLEYS ... CEMETERIES Turning to the dusty, dogeared Book of Forgotten Street Names, making a mental note to replace the yellowed scotch tape that holds the cover together, we see that the tome plops open to... Astoria, Queens. Like Flushing, Astoria's pedigree dates to the mid-1600s, when William Hallett received a grant for the area surrounding what is now Hallett's Cove by Peter Stuyvesant. However, the oldest structures in the region date to the mid-1800s, after fur merchant Stephen Ailing Halsey had incorporated the village in 1839. Astoria was named for a man who apparently never set foot in it. A bitter battle for naming the village was finally named by supporters and friends of John Jacob Astor (1763-1848), not least Stephen Halsey. Astor, entrepreneur and real estate tycoon, had become the wealthiest man in America by 1840 with a net worth of over $40 million. (As it turns out, Astor did live in "Astoria"his summer home, built on what is now East 87th Street near York Avenuefrom which he could see the new Long Island Village named for him.) Like most other towns and villages in Queens, Astoria (which on this Forgotten page we'll describe as having the East River on the north and west, Broadway on the south, and Hazen and 51st Streets on the east as its boundaries) carried names for its streets, but it also had its own numbering system, which we'll also touch on.

HOME LAMPS ADS TROLLEYS ... FORGOTTENSTUFF EVELOPERS can be a hateful, despicable bunch. Quite a statement coming from a website that evades controversy like Barry Bonds evading a steroid test. But it's the truth. I am completely ignorant regarding real estate, the price of land and housing, the taxes. I have been a renter my entire adult life and will likely remain so, unless that weekly Megamillions ticket comes in. Developers are tearing down perfectly good one-family homes built in an era, the 1860s and prior, when craft and style were still treasured, and replacing them with blond-bricked junk. Flushing's gone. It died in the 50s and 60s, when its Victorian-era housing stock was razed in favor of block after block of multi-unit apartment housing. And now, Astoria Village is going. Astoria Village's pedigree dates to the mid-1600s, when William Hallett received a grant for the area surrounding what is now Hallett's Cove by Peter Stuyvesant. However, the oldest structures in the region date to the 1820s. Fur merchant Stephen Ailing Halsey incorporated the village in 1839.
