Zsa Zsa Gabor
"To marry a man out of pity is folly; and, if you think you are going to influence the kind of fellow who has "never had a chance, poor devil," you are profoundly mistaken. One can only influence the strong characters in life, not the weak; and it is the height of vanity to suppose that you can make an honest man of anyone."
Margot Asquith (1864-1945)
"In marriage there are no manners to keep up, and beneath the wildest accusations no real criticism. Each is familiar with that ancient child in the other who may erupt again. . . . We are not ridiculous to ourselves. We are ageless. That is the luxury of the wedding ring."
Enid Bagnold (1889-1981)
"The curse, which lies upon marriage, is that too often the individuals are joined in their weakness rather than in their strength-each asking from the other instead of finding pleasure in giving."

The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha ...we should have a great many fewer disputes in the world, if words were taken for what they are, the signs of our ideas only; and not for things themselves. Asquith
Margot Asquith (1864-1945), wife of the British Prime Minister Lord Herbert Henry Asquith, was another character famous for her quick wit and sharp tongue. When she and movie star Jean Harlow (1911-1937 also famous for a sardonic wit as well as for her beauty) met for the first time, Harlow was careless enough to address the lady by her first name. To make matters worse, Harlow pronounced the name as though it rhymed with "lot." Lady Asquith drew herself up to her full height and corrected Harlow by saying, "My dear, the t is silent, as in 'Harlow.'" -A Final Thought ... "He could not see a belt without hitting below it." Margot Asquith (1864–1945), British socialite. Quoted in: Mark Bonham Carter’s Introduction to Margot Asquith, Autobiography (first published 1936; repr. 1962), of former prime minister David Lloyd George.

Abernethy, John (1764-1831), British physician A titled gentleman who consulted Abernethy was received by the great doctor with the rudeness for which he was notorious. The patient lost his temper and told Abernethy that he would make him "eat his words." "It will be of no use," responded Abernethy, "for they will be sure to come up again." When Abernethy was canvassing for the post of surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, he called upon one of the governors, a wealthy grocer, in the man's shop. The grocer loftily remarked that he presumed Abernethy was wanting his vote at this important point in his life. Nettled by the man's tone and attitude, Abernethy retorted, "No, I don't; I want a pennyworth of figs. Look sharp and wrap them up. I want to be off." "Mrs. J consulted him respecting a nervous disorder, the minutiae of which appeared to be so fantastic that Mr. A. interrupted their frivolous detail by holding out his hand for the fee. A ?1 note and a shilling were placed into it; upon which he returned the latter to his fair patient, with the angry exclamation, 'There, Ma'am! go and buy a skipping rope; that is all you want.'"

These are extreme teachings. "In the bald and barren north is the Lake of Heaven" - Chuang-tse. There is humour too, and a closer look into pandas. They can look like wise and weary pandits. They are no bandits.
Many savoury things could be done through "some other way of thinking". It helps to pinpoint fair, central issues and let them stand out too, for many established values need reassessment. Observation is good for that, eventually. We will let you in on that.
