Matthew Arnold, Culture is "High Culture"
From Culture and Anarchy Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) was a preeminent poet of the Victorian era, a lifelong educator, a pioneer in the field of literary criticism, a government official (Inspector of Schools), and an influential public figure. But one of his most enduring legacies is his extensive body of writing on the topic of culture. Arnold saw culture"contact with the best which has been thought and said in the world" (cf. "high culture" in the glossary) as the crucial component of a healthy democratic state. Arnold's view of culture as involving such characteristics as "beauty," "intelligence," and "perfection" is a Neoplatonic one that is, it tends to assume that these values exist in the abstract and are the same for all human societies. His argument, then, is openly political: he feels that if more people will share and pursue his notions of beauty, truth, and perfectionof culturethat the world will be a better place. Compare this view with that of Raymond Williams who argues that culture isn't just the "best that has been thought and said," but rather that "culture is ordinary" and with the anthropological perspectives of

Matthew Arnold (1822-1888). Born in Middlesex, England, Arnold attended Rugby School (where his father was headmaster) and studied classics at Oxford. Following his graduation in 1844, he became a fellow at Oxford, and a master at Rugby School. In 1851, he was appointed inspector of schools in England and was sent by the government to observe educational systems in Europe. He remained in that post for some thirty-five years. As a poet, Arnold took inspiration from Greek tragedies, Keats, and Wordsworth. His collections include Empedocles on Etna and Other Poems (1852). An eminent social and literary critic in his later years, Arnold lectured in America in 1883 and 1886. His essay "The Function of Criticism" sheds light on his transition from poet to critic. Much of his work is collected in Complete Prose Works (11 volumes, 1960-1977).

Shakespeare
Others abide our question. Thou art free.
We ask and ask: Thou smilest and art still,
Out-topping knowledge. For the loftiest hill
That to the stars uncrowns his majesty,
Planting his stedfast footsteps in the sea,
Making the Heaven of Heavens his dwelling-place,
Spares but the cloudy border of his base
To the foil'd searching of mortality:
And thou, who didst the stars and sunbeams know,
Self-school'd, self-scann'd, self-honour'd, self-secure,
Didst walk on Earth unguess'd at. Better so!
All pains the immortal spirit must endure,
All weakness that impairs, all griefs that bow,
Find their sole voice in that victorious brow.
West London
Crouch'd on the pavement close by Belgrave Square
A tramp I saw, ill, moody, and tongue-tied;
A babe was in her arms, and at her side
A girl; their clothes were rags, their feet were bare.
Some labouring men, whose work lay somewhere there,
Pass'd opposite; she touch'd her girl, who hied
Across, and begg'd and came back satisfied.
The rich she had let pass with frozen stare.

Meeting
Longing Parting A Summer Night ... Too Late
Meeting
Again I see my bliss at hand,
The town, the lake are here;
My Marguerite smiles upon the strand,
Unalter'd with the year. I know that graceful figure fair,
That cheek of languid hue;
I know that soft, enkerchief'd hair,
And those sweet eyes of blue. Again I spring to make my choice;
Again in tones of ire I hear a God's tremendous voice: "Be counsell'd, and retire." Ye guiding Powers who join and part, What would ye have with me? Ah, warn some more ambitious heart And let the peaceful be! Back To Top Parting Ye storm-winds of Autumn! Who rush by, who shake The window, and ruffle The gleam-lighted lake; Who cross to the hill-side Thin-sprinkled with farms, Where the high woods strip sadly Their yellowing arms Ye are bound for the mountains! Ah! with you let me go Where your cold, distant barrier, The vast range of snow, Through the loose clouds lifts dimly Its white peaks in air - How deep is their stillness! Ah, would I were there! But on the stairs what voice is this I hear, Buoyant as morning, and as morning clear?

Matthew Arnold is buried in the family plot in All Saints' Churchyard, Laleham, Middlesex. (See map...ref no. 20) Arnold was the son of Thomas Arnold, a Headmaster of Rugby School, who is also buried in the churchyard. In 1851 Arnold became an inspector of schools - a career to which he dedicated 35 years of his life. In 1858 Arnold became Professor of Poetry at Oxford University which was rather ironic as, with the exception of one further poetry collection, he wrote prose for the rest of his life.

Culture, then, is a study of perfection, and perfection which insists on becoming something rather than in having something, in an inward condition of the mind and spirit, not in an outward set of circumstances.
Arnold, Matthew
Culture

Culture, the acquainting ourselves with the best that has been known and said in the world, and thus with the history of the human spirit.
Arnold, Matthew

Creeds

Unquiet souls. In the dark fermentation of earth, in the never idle workshop of nature, in the eternal movement, yea shall find yourselves again. Arnold, Matthew Death and Dying Truth sits upon the lips of dying men. Arnold, Matthew Death and Dying If experience has established any one thing in this world, it has established this: that it is well for any great class and description of men in society to be able to say for itself what it wants, and not to have other classes, the so-called educated and intelligent classes, acting for it as its proctors, and supposed to understand its wants and to provide for them. A class of men may often itself not either fully understand its wants, or adequately express them; but it has a nearer interest and a more sure diligence in the matter than any of its proctors, and therefore a better chance of success.
